Title: 109 Mass and Density

1
10-9 Mass and Density
  • In todays lesson we learn to calculate the mass
    and density of an object.

2
Mass and Density
  • Mass the mass of an object is the measure of
the amount of matter it contains. In the metric
system, we use grams (g), kilograms (kg) and
    metric ton (t).
  • Density the mass per unit volume of a substance
is its density. When describing densities, we use
a slash (/) for the word, per. (Example the
density of gasoline is 0.66kg/l which means
that a liter of gasoline weighs 0.66 kg your
science teacher would not be happy with my
    example).

3
Mass and Density
  • The formula for calculating mass is
  • Mass Density x Volume
  • You will need to have/use the following
    conversion chart
  • 1 L 1000 cm3
  • 1 mL 1 cm3
  • 1 m3 1000 L
  • You will also need the tables on page 382 to
solve the problems for todays assignment.

4
Examples
  • What is the mass of 3L of water?
  • Using Table 2, the mass of 1 L of water 1.00 kg
  • So 3 L of water would be 1.00(3) 3 kg

5
Example
  • What is the mass of 2 cm3 of gold?
  • 1 cm3 of gold 19.3 g/cm3
  • 2 cm3 of gold 2(19.3) 38.6 g
  • LABEL YOUR ANSWERS CORRECTLY!
