2
Abstract
  • The CRL is an electronic logbook used to capture
    control room activity.
  • Large feature set text, images, thumbnails,
forms, binary files, hand drawn entries,
programmatically added entries, web interface for
remote searching and viewing, text formatting,
    keywords, email, scheduled entries, multiple
desktops, cut and paste, platform independent,
    vendor independent, and highly configurable.
  • Technologies Java and XML
  • Second generation, the HEPBook, is in progress as
an SBIR by Gary Roediger and Pat Pomatto

3
Goals and Stakeholders
  • Goals
  • Deliver new features and bug fixes
  • Installation for CMS, BTeV and other new users
  • Release remote access
  • Upgrade to the HEPBook
  • Stakeholder Organizations
  • D0 (170,000 entries), Minos, MiniBooNE, BTeV
Pixel, CMS (3 installations) with one moving to
    CERN in May.

4
Participants, Timeline, and Deliverables
  • Participants
  • Philippe Canal (10), Gary Roediger (HEPBook),
Pat Pomatto (HEPBook), Mark Leininger (20),
    Suzanne Panacek (10)
  • Timeline and Deliverables
  • Installation for CMS HCAL this week, plan to move
    it to CERN in May.
  • Release with remote access, next month
  • Upgrade to HEPBook available end of the year
  • Deliverables are
  • Java application, Web interface, Process logger,
    and documentation.
  • Deployed in AFS, kits, and downloadable from the
    web.

5
Issues
  • Having CMS as a user brings new challenges.
  • Does CERN want to use the CRL? Do they want to
    support it there?
  • Start small, with only the HCAL group, then add
the other groups. Very important for CRL.
  • HEPBook Upgrade
  • Avoid developing same features twice (CRL and
    HEPBook)
  • The HEPBook is designed to be a general
collaboration notebook that can run on laptop. It
will attract many more users with diverse
interests. At that time we will ramp up support.

6
Issues
  • Experiments web pages
  • The current assumption that all experiments
maintain their own web interface is not
realistic. Technically feasible, not accepted by
    D0, problems with releasing fixes.
  • We will have to assume some support for the
    experiments web pages.
  • To support the CRL, the web interfaces, and the
    HEPBook
  • request one person 60 to ramp up full time by
    end of the year.
