An Introduction
  • The tropical rainforest covers about 4 million
    square miles.
  • The tropical rainforest is home to 1/3 of all
    living species living on Earth!
  • The plants of the rainforest are responsible for
    much of the Earths oxygen.

3
Where is the Tropical Rainforest?
4
The Tropical Rainforest is located in countries
between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of
Cancer.
5
The average temperature of the tropical
rainforest is 75 degrees F.
It seldom varies from this temperature from
season to season.
6
The average annual rainfall in the tropical
rainforest is 80 inches. This makes the
environment hot and wet. A perfect greenhouse!
7
The Tropical Rainforest
  • There are five areas, called layers, to the
    tropical rainforest.

8
The Emergent Layer
This is the tops of the highest trees. In the
emergent layer, some of the tops of the trees are
240 feet tall! These trees are home to many
birds, insects, and spiders.
9
The Canopy Layer
The canopy is below the emergent layer. Lower
growing trees provide homes to birds, mammals,
like howler monkeys, insects, and snakes!
10
The Understory Layer
This is where the environment is dark, hot and
humid. Most of the vegetation in this area has
adapted to the environment. The plants are
leafy, short, and non-flowering. Vines, called
lianas grow on the trees.
11
The Shrub Layer
In this layer, many low growing plants live.
And some frogs too!
12
The Forest Floor
The forest floor is teeming with wildlife!
13
The Tropical Rainforest

Flying Dragon

Some trees in the tropical rainforest are HUGE!
17
In our rainforest unit, we will
  • Play Math Manhunt, using facts about the
    rainforest.
  • Chart the amount of rainfall in different
    rainforests.
  • Create a wall mural for our classroom of the
    rainforest.
  • Learn about ecosystems.

18
For science, we will be making our own tropical
rainforests!
  • We will need to bring in the following items
  • A Clay Flowerpot, 4 inches
  • Gardening Gloves
  • A Small Plastic Container for Water

19
Here is a list of some of the books we will be
reading and using for our rainforest unit!
  • Rainforest Animals by Paul Hess
  • The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry
  • Welcome to the Green House by Jane Yolen
  • Nature Unfolds, the Tropical Rainforest by Gerard
    Cheshire
  • The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn
    Lasky
