Title: There are many types of materials that can be found at the library. In this tutorial, we will divide

1
There are many types of materials that can be
found at the library. In this tutorial, we will
divide all the materials into three major
categories. Then we will discuss how to find
materials from each category. Here we go
2
What do you think of when you see the word
Library?
  • Books!

3
Besides books, libraries also have other types of
materials, including
  • CDs
  • Cassette Tapes
  • and Video Tapes

4
These materials are similar because
  • they can be kept on a shelf in the library
  • they generally have one main title and author,
    and
  • they generally can be checked out of the library

5
For our purposes, we will call this category.
  • Books and Tapes

6
Another category of materials found in the
library is
  • Magazine Articles

7
Besides magazines, this category also includes
Journal articles. Journal articles are similar
to magazine articles but
  • they deal with more scholarly or technical
    topics.
  • they have less pictures and ads
  • the authors of the articles are experts in their
    area of study

8
Magazines and journals are similar because
  • several issues of a magazine or journal are
    published each year
  • they have many articles about different topics
    in each issue

9
For our purposes, we will call this category.
  • Magazines and Journals

10
Another category of materials that can be found
at the library is
  • Internet Sources

11
Of course, Internet resources are not actually
located at the library, but most libraries
provide access to the Internet resources which
are located on computers all over the USA and the
world.
12
Internet resources differ a great deal in their
content, but share these characteristics
  • they are created and housed on computers which
    are connected to the Internet
  • they are found by using a computer program
    called a search engine
  • they can be viewed by any computer with an
    Internet connection

13
So the information in a library can be grouped
into these three categories.
14
Just as these resources have different
characteristics, so there different ways to look
up information in these categories. Next, we
will look at how to find each type of
information
15
Finding Books and Tapes
  • To find books about a topic or by an author, you
must use a computer program called an Online
    Catalog
  • Online catalogs may look different from library
to library, but they all work similarly

16
Three Basic Types of Online Catalog Searches
  • Author Searches allow you to search for books by
    a particular person
  • Title Searches allow you to find books with a
    specific title
  • Subject Searches allow you to find books about a
    particular topic

17
  • Our Online Catalog allows you
  • to search in these three different
  • ways

18
  • We can do a Subject search on
  • the topic smoking by selecting
  • the Keyword Subject Heading
  • option, and typing smoking in
  • search box

  • The call number
  • is like a street
  • address. To find this
  • book, you would only
  • need to ask where in
  • the library the books
  • with 174 call numbers
  • were located.
  • .

Finding a Book on the Shelf
21
Now, on to our next category
22
Finding Magazine and Journal
Articles
  • How do you go about doing this? By scanning
through magazines and looking for articles about
    your topic?
  • This would take far too long and be almost
impossible. Fortunately, we have help from a
    useful tool called an index

23
What is an Index?
  • Your pointing finger is also called your index
finger. And, just like your pointing finger,
other types of indexes also point out things.
  • The indexes found in a library point to where
    information is located.

24
A Book Index
  • An index at the back of a book lists the subjects
that the book covers. It points to where
information about different topics is located in
the main body of the book.
  • So you do not have to read through an entire book
to be able to find information in it about a
    particular topic.

Magazine and Journal Indexes
  • A magazine index is also known as a periodical
    index or a periodical database.
  • Except this type of index tells you where to find
magazine or journal articles about a particular
    topic.

  • Many of these computerized indexes even have the
actual text of articles that originally appeared
in the paper version of magazines and journals,
    like those .
  • This makes searching for articles even easier.
  • So, in a sense, you can use a computer to help
you search through and print articles from stacks
    and stacks of magazines.

  • Or click on the Print
  • button and read it later.

33
And now, our final category
34
First, What is the Internet Anyway?
  • Basically it is a network of computers connected
together, which allows people to share
    information quickly and easily.
  • It was set up by the government for research
purposes, but now is used for many purposes and
is not really controlled by anyone.

35
Because the Internet is not controlled by anyone
  • Almost anyone can put information on the
    Internet.
  • There are many types of information on the
Internet. There is something to offend almost
    anyone.
  • Information may or may not be reliable. It must
be evaluated carefully before being used.

36
Finding Internet Resources or Web Sites
  • So how do you go about finding web sites?
  • Just as a tool called an index helps you find
magazine articles about a topic, so, a tool is
also needed to find sites on the Internet.
  • This tool is a computer program called a Search
    Engine.

37
What is a Search Engine?
  • A search engine allows you to search the Internet
with terms about the topic you want information
    about.
  • You enter the terms and the search engine will
bring up web sites that contain those terms.
  • There are many, many search engines, but they all
basically work in the same way. We are using the
search engine Google as our example.

38
  • To find a web site for which you already have the
    address,
  • simply type the address of the site into the
    address window at
  • the top of your Internet program.

39
vegetarian recipes
  • Once at the Google site, type your search terms
    into the search
  • and click on Google Search.
  • In our example, we are looking for vegetarian
    recipes.

40
  • This results in a list
  • of web sites that have
  • the search terms we
  • asked for.
  • To see a site, you
  • simply click on its
  • title.

41
  • This takes you to the actual web site. You can
print the page by using the Print button. To go
back to see other sites, click Back.

42
Now that we have learned about the three
categories of library information..
we can see how our librarys web page allows you
to search for each type of information.
43
  • Our page has a
  • section to help
  • you search for
  • each type of
  • resource we
  • have covered in
  • this tutorial.

44
Now, You Can Go to our Web Page and Practice
  • Just click on the image below.
  • And, if you need any help, feel free to contact
    one
  • of our helpful librarians. Happy searching!
