Study Abroad Options
  • Choose one of Northwesterns established Exchange
    Programs OR
  • Arrange your own independent study

Both options are regulated by the ABA and the

Applying for Study Abroad
  • Apply for Fall Term by April 1st for Spring Term
    by October 1st
  • Download and complete the Study Abroad
    Application form at http//www.law.northwestern.e
    du/studentaffairs/studyabroad/application.htlm
  • You may apply to more than one program but be
    sure to rank your order of preference
  • Students will be selected on the basis of merit,
    academic records, maturity, and potential for
    positive contribution to the program

Finances
  • Pay full tuition to NU
  • Eligible for financial aid as if enrolled at NU
  • Student responsible for funding travel and
    housing
  • Additional fees to the foreign school will not
    exceed 250

Transcript Information
  • Credit will be earned for passing grades in
    courses studied abroad, but no letter grades will
    appear on your NU transcript
  • The number of credits awarded for your study
    abroad will be arranged in advance
  • Students may write a 3 credit paper under
    supervision of a faculty member at the host
    institution

Number of Credits
  • You may enroll in 10 NU equivalent credits and
    may receive up to 14 NU credits for your studies
  • Roughly 700 minutes in class equals 1 NU credit

Housing Advising
  • Participating schools help you find housing
  • Participating schools will also provide an
    academic advisor to assist exchange students

Individual Study Abroad
  • Students make arrangements directly with the host
    school
  • Be prepared to show the unique advantage of your
    chosen educational program
  • Students must secure an academic advisor from the
    institution selected
  • Check out the Internet Legal Resource Guide at
    www.ilrg.com/lsahq/adhoc.html
  • Registrar must approve courses and credits in
    advance

Applying for Individual Study
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Once your program is chosen and you have
    identified an Academic Advisor, meet with the
    Director of International Programs to discuss an
    academic plan.
  • You must participate in administrative and
    academic meetings before and after your study
    abroad
  • Obtain/confirm that your insurance meets the
    standards of the host school

Housing for Individual Study
  • Student must find housing on their own.

Paying for the Program
  • Tuition is paid to NU
  • Students will not be eligible for NU grants or
    loans
  • Students may apply for external private loans BUT
    do not qualify for federal loans or the NU Loan
    for 2005-2006
