- Purpose of Disaster Management
- In addition to protecting the public from hazard
and to synchronize existing regulations, DM Law
No. 24/2007 also serves the purpose to - ensure the implementation of planned,
coordinated and inclusive disaster management,
taking into account respects for local wisdom,
building public-private partnership, enhancement
of spirit for mutual solidarity and charity, as
well as creating peace in community life,
nationhood and statehood.

14HFA Implementation in Indonesia- Progress Review

- Organized in August 2008 through two-day Focused
- Group Discussion in Jakarta with support from
SCDRR, UNDP and UNISDR - HFA Monitoring tool developed by UNISDR (22
indicators for five - HFA Priorities for Action)
- Multi-stakeholder participation (except private
sector and media) - Results of the review indicates that HFA
Progress in Indonesia (2007 2008) is mostly in - level 2 (Some progress, but without systematic
policy and/or institutional commitment ) - and level 3 (Institutional commitment attained,
but achievements are neither comprehensive nor
substantial) - (with level 5 as the highest and perfect level).

- Submitted to UNISDR in September 2008 as interim
report as input for the Global Review - Will be finalized in March 2009 through
multi-stakeholder consultations (including Media
and Private Sector) - Results of the review can be used as inputs for
the development of Disaster Management Plan, as
well as Strategic National Action Plan 2010 - 2014

- The UN Economic and Social Council Resolution
1999/63 - called on all Governments to maintain and
strengthen established national and
multi-sectoral platforms for natural disaster
reduction in order to achieve sustainable
development goals and objectives, with the full
utilization of scientific and technical means. - In 2005, the UN General Assembly, resolution
A/RES/59/231 - called upon Governments to establish national
platforms or focal points for disaster reduction,
encourages government to strengthen platforms
where they have already exist, urges United
Nations system to provide appropriate support to
those mechanisms
