Practice Summary
  • Introduction
  • Waste Problem Main Issues
  • Solution approach
  • Implementation
  • Performance measures and results
  • References

4
1. Introduction
  • The Fifth Environmental Action Programme
principles and all the directives in waste matter
encourage the reduction in packaging utilisation
and the prevention of packaging waste.
  • According to 94/62 EU directive at least the 50
of packaging has to be separated from other waste
    to recovery recycled material.

5
2. Main issues
  • In this practice we briefly illustrate some
examples related with the introduction of new
    technologies in packaging production and
eco-design utilisation in order to prevent
packaging waste production and to avoid
    non-recyclable materials use.

6
3. Solution approach COOP Italy
  • COOP Italy
  • First case in Italy of FSC (Forest Stewardship
Council) certification for many kind of domestic
paper product (as napkins, handkerchief, toilet
paper etc.), which attest that paper is produced
    respecting the most rigorous international
    social, economics and environmental standards.
  • In the last years COOP Italy planned products
    packaging on the principle of
  • saving
  • reusing
  • recycling

7
3. Solution approach COOP Italy
  • Saving
  • Elimination of cardboard wrapping for many
products in tube as mayonnaise, toothpaste,
  • Elimination of cellophane in multipack (as coffee
packaging) and use of a adhesive tape.
  • In the period 2000-2004, Coop saved 645 t of
    materials.
  • Reusing
  • In particular in relation with soap, shampoo,
detergent and washing up liquids recharging
    bottles.
  • In the period 2000-2004, Coop saved 984 t
    of plastics.
  • Recycling
  • Coop Italy promotes recycled plastics utilisation
for packaging used in domestic detergents by a
minimum of 25 to over 70.
  • In some products packaging its used 100 of
    recycled PET.
  • For the production of some paper product (as
    napkins, handkerchief, toilet paper, paper
sheets, etc. they use recycled paper 100.
  • In the period 2000-04, Coop used 3496 t of
    recycled plastics (PET PE).
  • Besides in the last two years they promote
    products guaranteed by
  • Ecolabel certification and SA8000 Ethical
    certification.

8
3. Solution approach COOP Italy
  • An innovation in packaging is related with the
    utilisation of biodegradable materials without
plastics for the production of throwaway dishes,
    glasses or paper cup.
  • Products and packaging are made with PLA Nature
Works TM (polymerized lactic acid). PLA is
produced by a sugar which derives by starch of
    maize.
  • The natural vegetable origin makes sure the raw
    material renovation and the biodegradability.
  • PLA is degradable 100 and represent an organic
    waste that can be composted.

9
4. Solution approach Tetra Pak
  • In 2006 it will produced in all the world a new
material for packaging, named WIDE, which
requires less raw plastic and that is more than
    30 thinner with better resistance
    characteristics.
  • Tetra pak previews a reduction in polymer
    consumption of 50,000 t/y.
  • WIDE reduces the energy consumption (17), uses
less non renewable material as polymers but more
paper (3,5) that can be recycled or composted.
  • The new material was tested in the last months in
Australia, Brazil and Japan with more than 50
billion of containers and by next month it will
be diffused in the other countries.
  • In order to promote innovation in packaging
  • Reduction of aluminium content,
  • Reduction of emissions derived by production of
    packaging,
  • Develop of new materials lighter and cheaper

10
4. Solution approach Tetra Pak
  • The cardboard used by Tetra Pak for drink
packaging are for the 75 made by paper that can
    be composted.
  • Its very difficult to obtain a separated
collection for these packaging in relation with
their low percentage (about 1,2 of the total of
    packaging).
  • In Sweden, Tetra Pak has created a particular
engine (named Premere) which presses packaging
and separates the inner liquid in order to
recycle cardboard with an higher efficiency of
    recovery.
  • Cartalatte e Cartafrutta
  • An innovation for recycled paper derived only by
Tetra Pak packaging for milk and juices
  • Ecoallene,
  • Alluminium and PE low density recycled for new
    plastic packaging.
  • Tetra Pak Italy in collaboration with the Paper
    Mill of Santarcangelo (Rimini)

11
5. Solution approach Marks Spencer (UK)
  • Marks Spencer will be the first retailer in
United Kingdom to test recycled plastic
utilizations in packaging production for food and
drink and to monitor consumers reaction.
  • The project is financed by WRAP founds (Waste
    Resources Action Programme).
  • Marks Spencer will test recycled plastic in
packaging for their products Food to go (salad,
    sandwich, drink, etc.).
  • During 6 months they will be used 1500 t of
recycled PET (rPET) in percentage about 30-50.

12
5. Solution approach Marks Spencer (UK)
  • The research previews a marketing monitoring and
the behaviour of consumers will be tested also.
  • It represents the first example of rPET
utilization for a very important product line.
  • Each product will inform consumers of using
material completely recyclable and that the
packaging was made with recycled material.
  • In order to measure the consumers answer opinion
polls will be made in each Marks Spencer
    selling point.

13
5. Approach Nestlè
  • Nestlè is the largest food producer in the world.
  • Nestlé UK defined standard procedures in relation
with packaging design based on Essential
    Requirements legislation (prevention standard
CEN EN 134282000) and Responsible Packaging Code
    of Practice developed by INCPEN.
  • Many contact with trading office and consumers
pushed Nestlè to control suppliers and packaging
quality control also by many tests and
    questionnaires submitted to customers.

14
5. Approach Nestlè
  • Examples of changing in packaging design
  • In the last year, Nestlé adopted many initiatives
    to reduce packaging volumes
  • Changing of the bottom of coffeespoon (35
    material saving).
  • Reduction of the box fin for two chocolate
wrapping (dairy box e black magic), with a
    material saving of 10,75.
  • Results
  • Reduction of 124 t/y of metallic packaging,
  • Reduction of 208 t/y of paper and cardboard
    packaging

15
5. Approach Nestlè
  • The most important innovation is related with the
project The chocolate that melts in your
    garden.
  • Nestlé will use a 100 compostable plastic in
Dairy Box packaging, produced by renewable
resources. The new tray melts in 3 minutes at the
contact with water or in 3 months if its dumped
this kind of tray is produced by corn starch and
uses less than 50 of energy during productio
    process.
