4Project goals
- To establish solid basis for full implementation
of the Stockholm Convention. - To strengthen national capacity for POPs
chemicals management, in general. - Government recognized the need for the Stockholm
Convention implementation and facilitated its
implementation in the Parliament. - To prepare strategic document National
Implementation Plan for POPs reduction and
implementation.

- Establishment of project management mechanism

- Preparatory activities
- Establishment of working groups for preliminary
POPs inventories elaboration. - Training for the members of the working groups
for preliminary POPs inventories elaboration. - Definition of preliminary POPs inventories.
- Identification and adoption of national
priorities in the area of POPs management. - Preparation of action plans for POPs reduction
and elimination in the Republic of Macedonia. - Development and promotion of final version of the
National Implementation Plan for POPs reduction
and elimination.
6Achievements
- March, 2004 ratified Stockholm Convention on
POPs by the Parliament of the Republic of
Macedonia (Official Gazette of RM, No. 17/2004). - December 2004 Final version of the National
Implementation Plan for POPs reduction and
elimination promoted. - January 2005 The Government of the Republic of
Macedonia, by conclusion, adopted the National
Implementation Plan for POPs reduction and
elimination and obliged the MEPP to implement
action plans contained in the document.
7Experience acquired and lessons learned
- Problems solving in accordance with the
obligations set in the action plans under the
NIP, - Adequate approaches to identification of problems
related to chemicals management, - Recognition of the need to establish solid and
sustainable institutional mechanism in the MEPP
for chemicals management and international
agreements implementation, - Experience gathering in the area of
identification of chemicals presence and release
(in the case of POPs-chemicals), - Experience in the development of national
chemical profile, although related to a group of
chemicals only, - Experience acquired in public campaigns running
towards public awareness rising, - Organization of thematic workshops with specific
goals and tasks set, - Team work and close cooperation with institutions

- 1. Identification of landfills at which waste
disposed contains POPs and other organochlorined
pesticides and where uncontrolled waste burning
takes places, - 2. Selection of final solution for
- Upgrading of the existing incenerator within
Drisla landfill, - Development of educational documentation
(according to EU standards), - Stabilization/remedy of existing landfills.

PCBs and PCBs contaminated equipment - Goal of the project
- Development of project that will enable
substitution of PCBs containing or contaminated
equipment and definition of procedures for
capacity building in equipment replacement,
through application of best available techniques,
training of directly involved professionals and
assistance to the MEPP in defining mechanism for
safe handling of PCBs containing or contaminated
equipment.

- Identification and marking of PCBs containing or
contaminated equipment, as identified in the
preliminary inventory, - Documentation of the equipment establishment of

management of PCBs containing equipment, - Overview and updating of legislation related to
management of PCBs containing equipment in all
phases of its life cycle, - Selection of adequate technology for removal of
