THE ISSUE At the popular visitor site, Brookside
Gardens, deer are destroying the flower beds.
Current deer population have grown over the past
few years to the point that there is not enough
food for them. The deer are seeking food
elsewhere. When they venture out they not only
destroy local gardens but also cause many
accidents. What is to be done with the deer?
3
  • Population Issues
  • What happens as population increases beyond the
    capacity of the land
  • Is there a relationship between human population
    and deer population
  • What is carrying capacity?
  • What is the Malthusian Theory?

  • The Predictions
  • Using the exponential model
  • Y186207587.1x1.009915178
  • the following predictions were made
  • The US Population in 10 years will be
    approximately 299000935
  • The US population in 50 years will be 443678644

6
  • Limitations of the Model
  • Although the model found is probably a good
predicator for the period of time from 1950
through 2010, it may not be a good model for
    years beyond.
  • WHY?.

7
  • Conclusions
  • How does it all fit together?
  • Factors that affect different populations
  • Carrying Capacity
  • Malthusian Theory
  • Mathematical Models
  • Is there a better model? - logistic curve
