1
Depict a still life of a single animal bone. This
bone should be repeated multiple times to create
an interesting but non-animal related shape.
2
Create a modular figure using only black and
white chalk/charcoal. This image should have a
strong design component around the modular
figure.
3
Using brown paper, charcoal and chalk create a
boating or waterscape
4
Create a portrait using charcoal. Your portrait
should have all tonal values from light to dark.
5
Create a series of sketches of one type of animal
on the same page but in different positions like
an anatomical study. You need to do at least 8
sketches of the same animal.
6
Design a monochromatic image in which you use
strong fluid lines to create a balanced
composition.
7
Using scale depict a still life item but put it
in a scene that relates to the item but in a
different scale than it would normally be found.
8
Depict a figure at rest, lying down or sleeping.
This figure should be in a non-traditional
sleeping location (not in a bedroom or lying on
the sofa).
9
Create a very detailed drawing of ancient
buildings.
10
Using only black and white lines create a
portrait which segments each part of the face.
Each of these facial segments should have evenly
spaced lines to create a fullness of the face you
should use differing line directions with in each
segment.
11
Begin with a light wash and then depict an animal
in its natural habitat using only the same color
family you used for the wash. You should be able
to see a full tonal value with lights and darks
with in your chosen color values.
12
Design a set of curved shapes with differing
design patterns. Your shapes should seem to be
wrapped around an unseen shape like a ball or bar
to create the illusion of form.
13
Depict a still life composition using both
geometric forms and vessels that are both
overlapping each other and stacked on top of one
another. Pay careful attention to the shading and
highlights cast by the lighting.
14
Depict a figure which if floating or levitating
in some mysterious way.
15
Create an image of trees that disappear into a
vanishing point, this should create strong
repetition and rhythm.
16
Create a series of realistic portrayals of facial
features, these should each be separate but
unified on the same page, you should show at
least 4 facial features.
17
Depict an animal that is a symbol for a place,
this animal should be shown with another
prominent symbol of the same place like a flag or
building.
18
Design a pattern of lines using colored tapes or
painted strips of paper. Try to create a woven
texture with in your line design.
19
Depict a still life of a piece of clothing on a
dress form.
20
Depict people working in the fields or doing
another traditionally rural type of work. Look to
the work of American painters like Thomas Hart
Benton for inspiration.
21
Show a hilly or mountainous landscape with a
series of roads and/or paths to show the contours
of the hills.
22
Create a portrait of a mythical or fanciful
creature. This should be done in an over the top
style.
23
Depict animals at feeding time. This can be done
in the wild or in a stables or pen. For this
piece to be used for competition it should be
non-violent and positive in nature.
24
Design a mosaic pattern allowing the space
between the mosaic pattern to show through to
create its own sense of line and contrast. You
can either cut and paste this pattern or use tape
to create the lines and paint this patern using
acrylic or watercolor.
25
Create a still life of a box, take care to show
the shadows the open box would make. The
background should be simple to emphasis the
simplicity of the box.
26
Create an image of a traditionally seated figure
study. Your focus should remain on the figure
giving him/her a lot of detail and the background
is less focused and loose in style.
27
Create a mono-chromatic water/ landscape using
ink or watercolor.
28
Create a portrait using a non-realistic colors
and strong shading.
29
Depict a heard of animals. You need to depict at
least 5 of the same type of animal. You should
also show the animals from every angle by
positioning the animals around the composition.
30
Design a flag with a particular group in mind
where you combine an image or symbol of the group
along with the more traditional flag pattern,
this flag should represent a group or
organization associated with our school.
31
Depict a still life of chairs set against a
simple backgrouind that shows off the chairs
style.
32
Create an image of awe in which the person is
viewed from behind but expressiveness is still
shown as should the dramatic scene he/she is
looking towards.
33
Show a detailed infrastructure of a building or
stadium like structure.
34
Beginning with a color wash to fill the
background create a portrait with heavy shadow
and bright highlights. Your background wash and
lines to create the portrait should be one color
to create a mono-chromatic portriat.
35
Using a textile method such as patchwork and
stitching create a wall hanging of animals.
Consider using the Mola style from central
America, in this style they use strong lines and
bright colors to depict scenes.
36
Design a composition in which you take on
clothing pattern, one furniture pattern and one
rug pattern to create one composition.
