Title: Slavery and Freedom

1
Slavery and Freedom
2
Slavery causes a divide
  • Slavery divided the United States into two
    separate parts.
  • The North believed that slavery was wrong,
    unchristian, and unfair.
  • The South believed that slavery was critical to
    its economic growth.
  • Not being able to agree on slavery caused a major
    divide.

3
The Norths Answer
  • The Norths answer to the slavery issue was the
    Antislavery Movement.
  • The Antislavery Movement (movement against
slaves) was run by abolitionists. Abolitionists
is someone who joined the movement to abolish, or
    end, slavery.
  • Abolitionists were people in the North and South-
whites or free blacks, men or women- who worked
hard to end slavery who used many different ways
    to fight slavery.

4
Ways Abolitionists fought slavery
  • Writing pamphlets- against slavery and
discrimination of free blacks. (Discrimination is
the unfair treatment of particular groups of
    peoples)
  • Traveling across the country to speak against
    slavery-
  • Frederick Douglas who escaped slavery often spoke
    against it.
  • Sojourner Truth another escaped slave spoke in
favor of abolition and womens rights
  • Sarah and Angelina Grimke- a pair of sisters who
were daughters of a slave owner who spoke against
    slavery

5
  • Creating the American Anti-Slavery Society
  • Organization made up of primarily free blacks in
the North who worked openly against slavery
  • Raising money
  • Printing an anti-slavery newspaper
  • William Lloyd Garrison wrote The Liberator
  • Writing books
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Toms Cabin
that describe the cruelty of slavery
  • Uncle Toms Cabin sold 300,000 in its first year.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin convinced many northerners that
    slavery was wrong.
  • The Underground Railroad
  • Physically fighting against slavery

6
The Underground Railroad
  • Underground Railroad was a series of escape
routes and hiding places to bring runaway slaves
out of the South and into the freedom of the
    North.

7
  • The Underground Railroad found success because
  • they worked at night
  • Members (free black men and whites) would give to
    the runaways
  • money,
  • food,
  • clothing,
  • medical aide
  • a safe hiding place known as stations
  • a guide known as a conductor
  • Harriet Tubman was the most famous conductor
  • She returned 19 times and helped about 300 people
    escape to the North.

8
Physically Fighting Against Slavery
  • In addition to Nat Turners Rebellion of 1831,
there were other physical fights against slave
    owners.
  • In 1859, John Brown, an abolitionist, decided to
start a rebellion against slavery by attacking a
US Army post at Harpers Ferry in the hopes of
getting guns to aide his rebellion.

9
  • It did not succeed and Brown was quickly
surrounded, captured, and hung as a traitor
accused of treason against the government.
  • This added fuel to the debate on slavery as
  • Northerners saw him as a hero for the cause
  • Southerners saw him as a violent man out to
    destroy their eay of life
