Financial Impact of Diabetes in Arizona
  • 3 billion Annual estimated cost of diabetes
    in Arizona
  • 13,243 Medical expenditures per capita, per

9
Prevention and Cost
  • Prevention of complications (through patient
education, covered supplies through insurance or
AHCCCS, and improved clinical practice behaviors)
would cost only a fraction of hospital admissions
  • Studies have documented that a balanced diet, an
exercise regimen, and improved glycemic control
lead to substantial benefits for patients with
type 2 diabetes in terms of decreased symptoms,
higher quality of life, and economic savings

10
Future Direction
  • Increase collaborations with partners,
    communities, and providers
  • e.g. work with AHCCCS to improve the quality and
timeliness of care provided through use of ADA
    standards of care and management
  • Move Diabetes Prevention and Control Program from
    Capacity Building to Implementation Phase
  • Increase ADHS ability to limit the impact of
    diabetes in Arizona
