Title: Revisit the Element of Shape to create the Illusion of form

1
Revisit the Element of Shape to create the
Illusion of form
  • Shape is an enclosed area. A shape may have an
outline or boundary around it. Some shapes show
up because of color, others by the space that
    surrounds them.

2
Shapes
  • Geometric shapes are precise, as if they were
made with a ruler or another tool. The square,
circle, triangle, rectangle and oval ore the five
    basic geometric shapes.
  • Organic shapes are not regular or even. Their
outlines curve to make freeform shapes. Organic
shapes are often found in nature.

Elements of value and form and the principles of
balance and unity
  • Elements value and form
  • VALUE Relative lightness and darkness of color
or tone. Value can describe form and space.
Tone refers to blacks, whites and shades of gray.
Color value refers to lightness or darkness of a
    color.
  • Form Is a three dimensional object. Form has
height, width and depth. Form is generally
defined by shadow (value), which shows its
    volume.

5
Form
  • Like shapes, forms have length, width and depth.
A form is an object with three dimensions.
  • Forms are also grouped as either geometric or
    organic.
  • Artists often use values and shading to create
the illusion of form in painting and drawing.

Design PrinciplesPrinciples of balance and Unity
  • Balance Asymetrical balance is informal balance
  • Unity A sense of oneness or a feeling that
everything fits together and belongs together in
the composition. Often created by the use of
overlapping objects and repeating colors (values)
    shapes or types of lines.
  • Composition The way in which the design elements
and principles are arranges to make a visual
    statement or picture.

9
In your journal
  • Create four sets of squares, cones and circles
  • Clearly label each set hatching, crosshatching,
    blending and stippling
  • Create value with each technique

10
Example of changing shape to form
11
Shading is the use of value to create light and
shadow to give the feeling of depth.
  • Hatching is drawing a series of thin lines all
    running in the same direction.
  • Crosshatching is drawing lines that criss-cross
    each other.
  • Blending is smoothly drawing dark values little
by little by pressing harder on the drawing tool.
  • Stippling is creating dark values with a dot
    pattern.
