Battle of Atlanta
  • The Battle of Atlanta was a battle in Atlanta.
  • It was fought during the Civil War on July 22,
    1864 just southeast of Atlanta, Georgia in what
    is now known as Fulton County.
  • The battle occurred mid-way through the Atlanta
    Campaign and the city would not fall for another
    six weeks.

  • The reason for the battle was that the Union
    tried to invade Atlanta to gain control and stop
    slavery in Georgia.

Gettysburg Address
  • Most famous speech by President Abraham Lincoln.
  • He spoke at the dedication of the Soldiers'
    National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on
    November 19, 1863.

  • Lincolns goal of the speech was to call upon the
    principles of human equality stated in the
    Declaration of Independence.
  • He said The Civil War as a struggle not merely
    for the Union, but as "a new birth of freedom"
    that would bring true equality to all of its
    citizens, and that would also create a unified
    nation in which states' rights were no longer
    dominant.

  • Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural
    address on March 4, 1865 at the start of his
    second term as President of the United States.
  • Lincoln did not speak of happiness, but of
    sadness.
