The Intervention

• Residents are the primary interface between
  patients and orders
• Decision aids within standing templates
• Helps residents identify smokers and provide
  intervention upon admission
• If not used at admission, residents nonetheless
  become familiar with the available interventions

The Measurement

• - Identification of smokers at admission
• - Smoking cessation counseling referrals
• - Pharmacologic replacement ordering behavior
• - Description of person placing orders (ie PGY1,
  PGY2, etc)
• - Link orders to discharge diagnoses for quality
  outcome evaluation

The Goals

• To improve the health of BWH patients by applying
  known helpful interventions
• To aid the decision making process of busy
  residents with an IT tool
• To improve BWH measurement of quality outcome
  measures
• To identify areas of need (ie more counseling
  resources)
