Title: Flood Alarm System in Western Puerto Rico

1
Flood Alarm System in Western Puerto Rico
  • Eric Harmsen

2
Objectives
  • The long-term objective of this research is to
develop a prototype emergency system alarm for
selected areas within the Mayagüez Bay drainage
basin which are susceptible to flooding.
  • The alarm information will be made available to
emergency management agencies via the internet.
  • A distributed hydrological model (Vflo) with
radar rainfall from CASA project and NexRAD will
be used produce different responses of the
    basins.

3
Objectives
  • Evaluate the response of the watershed to
different grid size resolution, using different
upscaling methods to find the optimal grid
resolution for real time applications that
include urban drainage to produce accurate
results within the study area .
  • Beginning 10 meters grid resolution.

4
Objectives
  • Perform a calibration with the ordered
    physics-based parameter adjustment (OPPA) method
and include an automated global sensitive
analysis for the input parameters to obtain the
optimal input combination for the local
conditions (i.e., tropical system and complex
    topography).

5
Objectives
  • Evaluate a long-term simulation to find and
understand operational limits to flood detection,
false alarms, and critical forecast skill indices
    with a distributed model.

Preliminary RAMS Results
  • The following plots present the vertical velocity
profile in m/s and the contours (black contour)
of the turbulent kinetic energy (m2/s2) at
different layers in the atmosphere (Z148.8m,
    Z3269m, Z5561m, Z6689m) respectively.
  • Topography is present to take a reference of the
    location of the velocity profile.

Jan-09-2007
  • On this day the sea breeze effect is visible.
  • Penetration was evident above 500 m in the
    atmosphere.
  • These plots present the velocity vectors at 48.5
m and the vertical velocity at 689m above the
    surface.
