My map!

Today you are going to design your own map using
  • To get started..
  • Log into
  • Click on viewer
  • Type in the name of your high school into the
    tool bar at the top of the web page.

  • Click on the layers button in the tool box and
    ensure that the following layers are ticked.
  • Overview
  • Aerial photography
  • OS Raster
  • User data
  • (move the layers forward and backwards to ensure
    they are listed in this order)

  • Zoom in to change the scale of the map using the
    slider. A good place to start is 120

Activity 1
  • Click on show opacity and show view to ensure
    that they are ticked.
  • Practice changing the dimmers and view of the
    different layers you have opened to see what
    happens.

  • AGAIN, Zoom in to change the scale of the map
    using the slider. This time to 1.4k

Move the layers forwards and backwards. Remember
the map is on the top if it is closer to the
bottom of the list.
  • Click the box next to the OS raster to close this
    layer or use the dimmer to get rid of the map.
    You should now have an aerial picture of your
    school.
  • You can bring back the map at any time by
    clicking the box again.

  • Practice using the tools (draw) to highlight,
    shade in and label things you can see on the map.

How do I delete?
  • Click on the select arrow. Then move the white
    arrow to the item you want to delete. Click on
    it. And press delete

When you click on the item you want to delete it
will show up like this.

Start your map!
  • Use the tools to highlight information on your
    map.

I used the pen tool to highlight areas that were
covered in woodland. I filled these areas in red.
I used the pen tool to highlight The area that
contained school buildings. I filled these areas
in yellow..

Activity 3
  • Use the Aerial photo to highlight other areas
    where the land is used differently (different
    land use).
  • Try..
  • Residential areas (houses) Could you highlight
    areas with different houses?
  • Main roads, car parks
  • Open space

Activity 4
  • Bring back the OS raster layer buy re-clicking on
    the box or using the dimmers.
  • Can you add any more information using this map?
  • Could you use the text tool to label roads and
    areas highlighted?

  • You can even start to label important buildings.
  • Click on the select arrow in the tool bar.
  • Double click on a place on the map this will
    bring up

Clicking here places the locations on the map
with a red dot.
  • Add some locations to your map. Then add your own
    labels using the text tool.

Finally
  • Once you think you have completed your map of the
    area. Close all the layers you dont want
    showing, except user data (click on the boxes to
    close the layers) to see your map. And save your
    map using save in the tool box.
