Hello!
  • For the first few minutes of class, jot down some
ideas about possible topics for your analysis

controversial issues, and everyday things that
affect you as a college student.

2
What have we done so far?
  • Summary
  • Paraphrase
  • What have you learned from those assignments?
  • How will knowing how to summarize and paraphrase
    help you in the future?

3
Sowhat comes next?
  • Exploratory essay
  • Article evaluation
  • How do these assignments lead up to the analysis
    essay?

4
Brief Assignment 3
  • Objective To practice exploratory writing in
    preparation for more formal writing
  • Description
  • For this assignment, you will explore a topic
that you anticipate possibly using for the 1.1
analysis draft. Read the short essays on pages
117 to 124, and then use Exercise 4.1 (page 116)
to see sample questions that you can use to
brainstorm topics for your analysis essay.

5
Group activity
  • As a group, choose one topic from the list you
made at the beginning of class.
  • Using the example questions in Exercise 4.1 on
page 116 of your textbook, brainstorm some ideas
    about this topic.
  • Organize your ideas into categories of related
    information.
  • Be prepared to talk to the class about your
    findings.

6
What happened?
  • What topics did you choose?
  • What kinds of information do you know about that
    topic?
  • Were there any major gaps in your knowledge?
  • How can you fill those gaps?
  • What kind of research do you need to do?

7
Brief Assignment 4
  • Objective To practice evaluating an article as
potential source material for an assignment
  • DescriptionImagine that you have been given an
assignment that requires you to write an analysis
of a particular topic. One of the first things
you would need to do to complete this assignment
is to evaluate the list of sources provided.
Select one source from the list provided below or
sources suggested by your instructor, and use the
Guidelines for critical reading in the St.
Martins Handbook, p. 28, to help you evaluate
that source. To complete this assignment, write
an evaluation of the source you have chosen. Your
evaluation should be approximately 2 paragraphs
    in length. http//findarticles.com/p/articles/mi
