Title: LAB SAFETY

1
LAB SAFETY
2
Lab Safety
  • Proper handling of equipment and chemicals
  • Prevents harm to self, others and property

3
WHAT IS IT?
  • THE PRACTICE OF HANDLING EQUIPMENT AND CHEMICALS
ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC METHODS FOR THE PURPOSE OF
PREVENTING HARM TO YOURSELF, OTHERS AND PROPERTY.

4
What is it?
  • Proper handling of equipment and chemicals
  • Prevents harm to yourself, others, property

5
BASIC LAB PRINCIPLES
  • WEAR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
  • KEEP AREA CLEAR
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK
  • USE EYE WASH SAFETY SHOWER
  • MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS

6
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
  • SAFETY GLASSES (PROTECTS EYES)
  • GLOVES (NOT ALL GLOVES ARE THE SAME) (PROTECTS
    HANDS)
  • LAB COAT OR LONG SLEEVE SHIRT (PROTECTS ARMS AND
    TORSO)
  • LONG PANTS (PROTECTS LEGS)
  • STURDY SHOES (NO FLIP-FLOPS OR SANDALS) (PROTECTS
    FEET)

7
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Lab coat/long-sleeved shirt
  • Long pants
  • Sturdy shoes

8
PROTECTS FROM WHAT?
  • Chemical spills
  • CORROSIVE (PH lt 2 OR gt12)
  • HOT LIQUIDS
  • BIOHAZARDS

9
KEEP AREA CLEAR CLEAN
  • REMOVE ALL BACKPACKS, COATS ETC. FROM WORK AREA
    TO PREVENT TRIPS FALLS
  • CLEAN UP ALL SPILLS, PAPER SCRAPS, AND GLASSWARE
TO PREVENT CUTS, BURNS AND FIRE
  • LAB INSTRUCTOR WILL GIVE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
    FOR CLEANING UP SPILLS

10
Keep Area Clear and Clean
  • No backpacks, obstructive materials
  • Clean up glassware, paper and spills
  • Consult instructor on chemical spill clean-up

11
FOOD DRINK
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE LABORATORY
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK IS TO BE STORED IN LAB
    REFRIGERATORS

12
Food Drink
  • No food or drink in laboratories or lab
    refrigerators

13
EYE WASH
  • IF YOU GET CHEMICALS IN YOUR EYES FLUSH WITH
WATER FOR 15 MINUTES AND SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
    CALL 811.
  • LOCATED AT LAB SINK

14
Eye wash
  • Flush eyes with water for 15 mins
  • Seek medical attention
  • Call 811

15
SAFETY SHOWER
  • IF YOU SPLASH CHEMICALS ON YOURSELF GO TO THE
SAFETY SHOWER AND RINSE YOURSELF FOR 15 MINUTES.
    CALL 811.
  • LOCATED IN LAB OR IN HALL OUTSIDE LAB

16
Safety shower
  • If you spill chemicals on yourself
  • Rinse off body part for 15 mins
  • Seek medical attention
  • Call 811

17
PROPER METHODS FOR USING.GLASSWARE
  • MAKE SURE GLASSWARE IS NOT CRACKED
  • LABEL ALL BEAKERS, FLASKS, TEST TUBES, ETC. WITH
    WHAT IS IN THEM.

TOULENE
18
GLASSWARE-CONT
  • CLEAN ALL GLASSWARE USING A LABORATORY DETERGENT
(ALCONOX) AND TAP WATER. RINSE SEVERAL TIMES AND
FOR FINAL RINSE USE A SMALL AMOUNT OF DEIONIZED
    WATER.
  • THE GLASSWARE IS CLEAN IF NO WATER DROPLETS
ADHERE TO THE CLEAN PART OF THE GLASSWARE
  • NEVER DISPOSE OF BROKEN GLASS IN THE TRASH. PLACE
    IN BROKEN GLASS BOX

19
Glassware
  • Use detergent and water to clean glassware
  • Use deionized water for last rinse
  • Dispose broken glass in separate container

20
USING CHEMICALS
  • READ CONTAINER LABEL AND MSDS BEFORE USING
  • IMPORTANT-DO NOT PUT EXCESS CHEMICALS BACK INTO
BOTTLE. YOU CAN CONTAMINATE THE CHEMICAL POSSIBLY
CAUSING A BAD REACTION THE NEXT TIME THE CHEMICAL
    IS USED.

21
Using chemicals
  • Read MSDS and container label before using
  • Dispose of all excess chemicals
  • Prevent chemical contamination

22
CHEMICALS-DISPOSAL
  • DO NOT POUR CHEMICALS DOWN THE DRAIN-PLACE IN
    SPECIFIC WASTE CONTAINERS.
  • EPA AND THE CITY OF DES MOINES HAVE SPECIFIC
REGULATIONS REGARDING THE DISPOSAL OF LABORATORY
CHEMICALS. (Criminal penalties and big fines if
    you do it wrong)

23
WORKING IN FUME HOOD
  • CHECK AIR FLOW BY TAPING A PIECE OF PAPER TO THE
OUTSIDE OF THE FUME HOOD SASH. THE PAPER SHOULD
BE PULLED TOWARD THE INSIDE OF THE HOOD. BE
CAREFUL NOT TO HAVE PAPER PULLED INTO HOOD FAN AS
    IT CLOGS THE DUCTS.

24
FUME HOODS CONT
  • USE THE HOOD WHEN WORKING WITH HAZARDOUS
CHEMICALS TO PREVENT INHALATION OF FUMES THAT MAY
    HARM YOU
  • CLOSE SASH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
  • TO PREVENT INJURY IN CASE OF AN EXPLOSION.

25
NEVER WORK ALONE IN THE LAB
  • WHAT CAN HAPPEN ?

26
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS
  • READ BEFORE USING A CHEMICAL
  • THEY GIVE YOU IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE
USE, HAZARDS AND DISPOSAL OF THE CHEMICAL
  • LOCATED IN LAB AND ON INTERNET

27
MSDS CONT
  • MSDSs PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION
  • Mfg. Name
  • Emergency Contact Info
  • Product Name
  • Hazardous Ingredients
  • Physical Properties
  • Fire Fighting info.
  • Reactivity information
  • Personal Protective equip.
  • Waste disposal info.
  • Environmental/
  • Regulatory Info
