Class today we are going to work in pairs.
Although you have all been working very well this
week, I am going to pick your partners.
Salome, I want you to work with Brittany. Jenna,
you can work with Natasha. Johnny, you will work
with
I knew it. Now I have to work with Brittany, I
dont even know her. This is going to be so weird.
Mrs. Dietrichs 5th Grade Class
Oh NO! I bet she wont put Jenna and I together.
Jenna and I always work together. I dont want
to work with someone else.

My best friend lives next door to me too. She is
in a different class though.
On and on we talked as we finished our homework.
I was so surprised at how much Brittany and I had
in common. It was not awkward working with her
at all. In fact, I had fun.
Yeah, we live next to each other so we do
basically everything together.
Hey, youre best friends with Jenna, right?
4
Class, put your homework away and get ready for
recess.
5
Girls, Come here. Look what I brought for you to
play with.
Dont you usually play on the monkey bars during
recess?
SIDEWALK CHALK!!! We love to play hopscotch.
Will you give Jenna and me a piece?
Which is exactly why this would be a good switch
for you Brittany. It will be more fun this way
with everyone playing together.
Natasha, why dont you help them? Ill give you a
piece too.
Can I play hopscotch with you too?
That does sound like fun.
6
We spent the rest of recess coming up with new
ideas of how to play hopscotch. The time flew
away and so did our feelings of difference. We
could have gone on for hours.
I dont think there is already a rule so we could
just make it up ourselves.
We should make this one harder. But how could we
do that?
Then how would we jump a row of four?
COOL!! Then we should do the two outside first
then the two insides.
We could make a line of four next.
7
Recess is over so stop what you are doing and
bring all the equipment in
Mrs. Dietrich was right all of us playing
together is a lot more fun.
Yeah!!! Lets do it.
This was a lot of fun. We should do this again
during our afternoon recess.
8
Thats true but have you noticed how many more
friends we have now?
At lunch we are not sitting alone just the two of
us. Now we all sit together. The only break in
the table is between the boys and us, and its
not even as big as it use to be
Even though we have more friends now you are
still my best friend.
Youre right. I had not thought of that.
I wish it was not snowing outside so we could
still play hopscotch.
Yeah me too, but I dont really feel like weve
lost a whole lot though
What do you mean? We cant play hopscotch anymore
we lost that!
Youre still mine too.

narrator
For the rest of the year I did not care when Mrs.
Dietrich gave us assigned working partners
because I was friends with everyone in my
class. We had all become friends over hopscotch.
10
It was the last day of school and everyone was
outside saying good bye, hugging each other and
signing each others yearbooks.
Bye
Have a great summer
Yeah lets all promise
Bye
I had so much fun this year with all of you. This
has been the best class ever.
Lets all promise to never forget each other and
stay friends forever.
Maybe well see each other next year.

Hi Salome and Jenna.
Hey girls!!!
The year came to an end and all of us moved on
to middle school and later to high school. I
never had any more classes with these girls from
Mrs. Dietrichs class but I would see them in the
hallway at school and we always said Hi.
Hey whats going on?
All of this just because of hopscotch
12
The End In remembrance of all the girls from
Mrs. Dietrichs 5th grade class of 1999.
