Title: The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

1
The Life Cycle of a Butterfly!
2
The Beginning
  • The Adult butterfly lays an egg. The egg is
usually tiny, round, or oval in shape. The female
butterfly attaches the egg to leaves, stems, or
other objects, usually on or near food the
    caterpillar likes to eat.

3
The Caterpillar
  • The caterpillar (or larva) is the long, worm-like
stage of the butterfly or moth. It often has an
interesting pattern of stripes or patches and it
may have spine-like hairs. This is the feeding
    and growth stage.

4
The Chrysalis
  • The chrysalis (or pupa) is the transformation
stage from a caterpillar to a butterfly. The
chrysalis is usually green or brown. It looks
like a tiny leathery pouch. You can sometimes
find one underneath some leaves in the summer.

5
Emerging Butterfly
  • The butterfly emerges from the chrysalis.
  • Butterfly Video

6
The Butterfly
  • The adult is the colorful butterfly or moth that
is usually seen. It is the reproductive and
mobile stage for the butterfly. The adults
undergo courtship, mating, and egg-laying. The
adult butterfly or moth is also the stage that
    migrates or colonizes new habitats.
