La Mariposa
The butterfly metaphor aka my
teaching philosophy

  • The life cycle of a butterfly is a metaphor that
describes the learning evolution of my students
    in the classroom.
  • The different stages in a butterflys life
consist of the egg, the larva (caterpillar),
the chrysalis (cocoon) and finally the emergence
    of the butterfly.

4
  • However, before I can reach out to my students
and help them develop into butterflies, I must
first be willing to change into one

to be an effective multicultural educator, and
indeed an effective educator, I must be in a
constant process of self-examination and
transformation. -Gorski

The Egg Stage
  • Where I get to know my students, and assess them
to see their strengths and weakness
  • Where they get to know me and that I have very
    high expectations from them.
  • Individualized Education for me its when I
give everyone the same concept of the assignment,
but am flexible enough to modify certain parts
    depending on the students level.

Tell me who you are. Some students will write
me a paragraph others a page, some a few
sentences.

The Caterpillar stage
  • When the students realize that they are free to
explore their surrounding by asking questions
they are ready to hatch into caterpillars
  • The caterpillar stage is when the students do
most of there wondering and exploring into the
content that is taught. They become critical
    thinkers.
  • A collaborative learning environment is
established where they learn from their fellow
    classmates, and from their teacher.
  • Teacher learns from their students.

7
  • The Chrysalis stage is when my students realize
what they are good at and who they are. It is
also when they are able to absorb much of the
information. They realize their own strengths
and their own intelligences or as Gardner would
    call an interpersonal intelligence.

8
La Mariposa
  • This is when my students achieve their quest of
reaching (their) full potential. This is also
known as Self-Actualization in Maslows Hierarchy
of Needs. In other words, this is when my
students spread their wings and fly around using
the knowledge they have in their everyday lives.
In addition, they are also able to help others
    (self-transcendence) find self-fulfillment and
    realize (their classmates) potential.

9
Advocacy
  • We as teachers have the responsibility to provide
    resources for our students
  • Talk to the parents and have them involved in
their students education just as much as the
teachers. By educating the Parents you are
helping them educate their own children. Ex.
Spanish language, having them keep teaching their
children their native language at home.

10
  • Just when the caterpillar thought the world was
    over
  • It turned into a butterfly
