Title: Do you know whats IN that A quantitative test for the amount of ammonia and nicotine in cigarettes

1
Do you know whats IN that?!A quantitative
test for the amount of ammonia and nicotine in
cigarettes
2
Purpose
  • To determine if Marlboro cigarettes contained
    more ammonia than another brand.

3
Why??
  • In the 1970s the Marlboro company began to put
    excess ammonia into theircigarettes.
  • This alters the amount of nicotine available to
    the smoker.

4
So then.
  • I decided to test a Marlboro cigarette...

5
  • Against a Kamel Red.

6
How????
  • A solute had to be chosen.
  • A soxhlet extractor was used to extract the
    soluble material.
  • A roto-vapor was then used to extract the
    remaining chloroform.
  • The remaining solid was then weighed.

7
Then.
  • The solid that was obtained had to be tested in
an NMR, to determine what it was that I actually
    had extracted.

8
Sowhat came of all of this?
  • The NMR results showed that I did extract
nicotine (along with some other things) from the
    cigarettes.
  • Therefore the the numbers that I calculated from
    the crude material were significant.

9
Results...
  • The Marlboro cigarettes showed 8 weight of
    crude material
  • The Kamel Reds showed 6.25 weight
  • Because the ammonia changes the amount of
nicotine available, more nicotine should indicate
    more ammonia

10
So
  • My results show that the Marlboros STILL contain
    more ammonia.

11
If I had knownOther things I might have done,
  • Use the smoking machine to trap the inhaled
smoke, change this to a liquid and test the pH.
  • Other methods of separation tlc or column
    chromatography with known substances
  • Colorimetry
  • Try to extract just the ammonia.
