Title: Celle a combustibile per la micro generazione

1
Celle a combustibile per la micro generazione
  • Alberto Zerbinato

2
Project Overview and Research Objectives
  • Project idea
  • To develop a 30kW micro CHP system able to
provide heat and power for a more efficient
    energy end-use in buildings.
  • The main objective of Sidera 30 is to introduce
the novel concept of a Polymeric Electrolyte
    Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell

In the EU there is a need for improved energy
end-use efficiency
Centralized CHP System
Future Building
Local HeatPower Distribution System
3
Project Overview and Research Objectives
  • Project idea
  • tHE CHP system is able to satisfy both the
thermal (heating and sanitary water), cooling and
electrical power need of the whole building
replacing the small methane boiler installed in
the single flats as well as old-fashioned
centralised oil thermal plant used in the 60s.

Functional Layout
  • Methane, methanol or bio-gas feed the catalytic
    burner.
  • Its main functions are
  • Raise of reformers temperature in order to
    activate the catalytic reactions
  • Production of steam to be injected into the
    process together with methane
  • Combustion of anodic Exhaust Gas

6
Functional Layout
Catalytic steam reforming The endothermic
reaction is CH4 H2O ? 3H2 CO taking place
in the presence of a proper catalyst as well as
in a proper temperature range (650-800C) Up to
50-60 of H2 in the reaction products
Desulfurizer The gas is filtered in order to
assure the membrane longer life time
7
Functional Layout
The gases pass through the first heat exchanger
and their temperatute decrease from 700 / 800 C
to less than 400C
  • Water gas shift
  • It consists in converting carbon monoxide in
    carbon dioxide and again hydrogen
  • CO H2O ? CO2 H2
  • The water gas shift reaction is an exothermic
reaction taking place between CO and H2O in a
    proper temperature range (250 400C) ? less
than 1 of CO left in the syn-gas)

8
Functional Layout
The gases go through the second heat exchanger
and their temperature decreases from circa 400C
to less then 200C
  • Final conditioning in the fuel processor
  • Selective oxidation of remaining CO (PrOx)
  • The chemical reaction is
  • CO 0.5 O2 ? CO2
  • The process consists in promoting the selective
oxidation of the remaining CO in the mixture (CO
lt 15 ppm) in a temperature range of 90-200C

In the last heat exchanger H2 temperature still
decreases to suitable values for feeding PEM fuel
cell
