  • Why now?

3
Rationale
  • During this time of unprecedented budget strain,
it is vital that we find creative and effective
ways to help our students mitigate the rising
costs of a CSU education, while honoring the
traditional role that faculty play in
    recommending and requiring instructional
    materials.
  • Improving and increasing the use of electronic
resources, will reduce the cost of a CSU
education while serving to innovate academic
programs and is aligned with CSSA policy
    priorities.

4
Rationale
  • To address this critical issue, it is important
that we better understand and highlight
instructional practices that represent a more
    affordable solution for our students.
  • Many of our faculty have chosen a different path
than the traditional textbook, utilizing open
educational resources, freely available on the
web, accessing the CSU electronic core
collections, or innovating their use of more
    affordable commercial options, through
    customization and digital delivery.

5
Rationale
  • In order to expand these innovations, a well
    coordinated communication plan must be
implemented to inform and encourage faculty to
consider adopting a range of lower cost options
    currently available to them.

6
Key Objectives
  • Create a faculty-driven, affordable learning
    solutions culture
  • Save CSU students 1M on learning materials in
    2010 2011
  • Optimize current investments in digital library
    resources
  • Provide professional development opportunities to
inform faculty of available options and peer
    practices
  • Increase utilization of open educational
    resources including MERLOT, Connextions,
    Curriki, MIT open courseware, etc.
  • Partner with the CSSA to provide additional
incentive to faculty and to convey positive
impact different choices make on student success

7
Phased Approach
  • In order to best understand how to scale
effective and more affordable practices, we will
    implement a phased approach.
  • Phase I Identifying Disseminating Current
    Practices (9/15/09 12/15/09)
  • Phase II Recruit Faculty Volunteers Provide
    Professional Development (1/15/10 5/15/10)
  • Phase III - Recognize new practices in highly
publicized ways through partnership with CSSA and
    local media outlets (9/15/10 12/15/10)
  • In subsequent years, repeat this phased approach
    to scale Affordable Learning Solutions

8
Phase I 9/15/09 12/15/09
  • Identifying and disseminating current practices
  • ATS to create Affordable Learning Solutions

    affordable learning solutions
  • ATS to coordinate and plan online faculty
workshops on OER, Electronic Library, and Lower
