What is Positive Behavioral Support?
  • PBS focuses on PROACTIVE support strategies that
    reduce the likelihood of problem behavior and
    allows individual students to be as independent
    and successful as possible in the school setting.
    It encompasses a range of strategies from
    systemic to individual supports.

  • ØSchools will continue to see more kids who
    engage in problem behaviors.

ØThe strategy of exclusion typically has been
ineffective and will become increasingly more
problematic to use.
ØSchools need to increase the use of special
education practices in general education to

behaviors.

2004 Reauthorizationof IDEA
  • December 3, 2004 President George W. Bush signed
    the reauthorization of IDEA.
  • Most of the changes go into effect on July 1,
    2005.

  • The new law insures that the discipline
    provisions for students with disabilities
    continue to protect the rights of these students
    to FAPE.

Additional training will take place to reflect
these changes.
