- The Heyendael Committee for Postgraduate Medical
Education organises the seventh postgraduate
course on Surgery of the Aortic Root, Mitral
Repair Including Surgical approaches for Atrial
Fibrillation directed at practising
cardiothoracic surgeons. -
- Surgical interventions and valve replacement at
the aortic outlet attracts more and more
attention as the result of surgical and technical
innovations. The same is true for mitral valve
repair including the treatment of Atrial
Fibrillation. This course focuses upon the region
of the aortic outlet with a view to a more
profound insight in the surgical anatomy of this
region and to enlarge the expertise in the
surgical approach of the aortic root pathology
such as the stentless xenograft aortic valve
replacement and aortic root replacement. The
second day will review the state of the art of
rhythm surgery and mitral reconstructive surgery
techniques. - The format of the course includes instructed
hands on surgery on fresh (unembalmed) anatomic
specimens interspersed with surgical
demonstrations on site and assessment of the
state of the art with video and slide
presentations. The participants will practice the
implantation of a stentless xenograft aortic
valve, the reconstruction of the aortic root and
mitral valve repair techniques. The use of
unembalmed anatomic material, which is unique in
the world, offers the opportunity to practice as
close as possible to a surgical intervention with
the corresponding tissue feeling. We hope to
welcome you at this remarkable course. -
