Physics 2211 Classical Mechanics
  • Mechanics How and why things move.
  • Describing motion, how things move
    (KINEMATICS)
  • What causes (changes to) motion or why things
    move? (DYNAMICS)
  • Classical
  • Not too fast (v ltlt c)
  • Not too small (d gtgt atom)
  • We start with translational motion where we
assume all masses to be particles located at
coordinates the center of mass of the object.
  • Most everyday situations can be described in
    these terms.
  • Path of baseball, Orbit of planets, motion of
    cars, airplanes, etc...

Some Words to the Wise
  • 1. Read the textbook before the lecture
  • Focus on new definitions, notation, vocabulary.
Bring any questions you have to class.
  • 2. Participate actively
  • Come to lecture Ask questions Join a study
groups Go to the Physics Help Sessions (N-209
Howey Physics) Come see me, E-mail the TA
    (address to be announced) .
  • 3. Keep up!

Manage your time wisely---work steadily every
day. Avoid the temptation to cram and put off
doing homework.

WORDS TO THE WISE
  • The universal dwells in the particular Keep
looking for the big picture or what examples
have in common rather than how they are
    different.
  • Relax All of this is really easy.

8
Coordinate Systems
  • Before we can talk about out things move we need
to decide how to concretely define where an
    object is.
  • In 2-D, or 3-D there are two basic types of
    coordinate systems
  • Cartesian coordinates (x,y,z) use units
  • three mutually perpendicular directions.
  • Conventions require right-handed system
  • 2) Polar (or spherical) coordinates (r,q,f) use
a distance and one or more angles

9
Vectors
  • Associated with each point is a vector from the
origin of the coordinate system to the point
    referenced by the coordinates.

10
Vectors
  • All vectors have both magnitude and direction.
  • Two vectors are equal if and only if they have
the same magnitude and the same direction.
  • Vectors are written as P or
  • -P is a vector of the same magnitude as P but in
    the opposite direction.

11
Coordinate Conversion
  • To convert from rectangular to polar coordinates
    use
  • and
  • The convention is that the x-direction is
direction 0 degrees and the q increases in the
    clockwise direction.
  • To convert from polar to rectangular coordinates
    use
  • Px rcos q and Py rsin(q)
  • Learn to do this on your calculator
