Title: Sam Langford

1
Sam Langford
2
His Beginnings
  • Sam Langford was born in Weymouth
Falls, Nova Scotia. He had a very short childhood
because at the young age of 12, he ran away. Only
two years later when he was only 14, he began his
boxing training in Boston, Massachusetts. When
Sam Langford was only 16 and weighed only 135
pounds, he had his first boxing fight. The match
was against the light weight champion, and Sam
was the clear winner. Unfortunately, this was not
    a title match.That was a good beginning to a
    great career.

Career
During his 21-year career Sam fought in
approximately 300 fights. This large number of
fights resulted in many injuries to his head and
other parts of his body. Sam had an amazing
career record of 167-38-37 but unfortunately, he
never got the title shot he deserved. Many people
claim this was because Sam was of African
heritage and was not shown the respect he
deserved because of racism. It was harder for him
to get the privileged fights.

After Career
  • After Sam Langfords boxing career ended,
he became blind probably because of all of the
physical abuse he took in the ring (to the face).
In his later life, he worked to raise money for
his cause, the prevention and treatment of
blindness. This courageous and amazing man died
in 1956 at the age of 90.

5
His Legacy
  • He was inducted into the Boxing Hall
of Fame, in 1990, the only boxer to get inducted
that never got a title shot or had a title. This
was a great achievement for him and the boxing
world and all of Canada. Im sure he was proud
of his career because it was great one. He was
one of the great boxers in his times and mostly
likely the greatest Canadian boxer of his time.
