Title: Exploring writing beyond the classroom

1
Everybody writes
  • Exploring writing beyond the classroom

2
What is Everybody Writes?
  • Everybody writes provides an opportunity for
teachers and children to get excited about
    writing
  • Most Everybody Writes projects feature
  • A series of writing activities
  • A one off celebration of writing
  • A change to the physical environment

3
Key ingredients to success
  • Finding ways to take writing beyond the classroom
  • Providing children with exciting stimuli for
writing based on their experiences and interest
  • Establishing real audiences for childrens
    writing
  • Writing across the curriculum

4
Example of a project completed
5
Why involve Norbury?
  • Projects have been trialled in Hampshire and
London and Phil Beswick and the Stockport team
are keen for Stockport to become involved
  • Stockport keen to initially involve schools that
dont always have first opportunity to be
    involved in such projects

6
Where are we up to?
  • Rob Bonner expressed an interest in our
    involvement
  • Andy and I have attended a course to introduce
the project and began to think about how we could
    become involved
  • We have completed a project proposal to begin to
    shape our project at Norbury

7
What will our project involve?
  • A celebration day
  • of our achievements at Norbury Hall with each
year group focusing on a different element/area
    of achievement

8
How will we achieve this?
  • Year group activities may include
  • Celebrating our sporting achievements by the
children playing a football match against the
parents and then writing a sports report
  • Celebrating the people in our school painting
    pictures and creating character profiles
  • A celebration of the school grounds designing
an orienteering course where the clues lead to
words which ultimately make a sentence,
developing a writing area on the infant
    playground

9
  • Whole school ideas
  • Before school providing an opportunity for
children with their parents to come and write
    their favourite/most memorable activity at
Norbury on the playground in chalk
  • Teachers to wear t-shirts that the children can
write their favourite thing about being in their
    year group on
  • Parents asked to write their fondest memories of
attending Norbury to be displayed in the hall at
the end of the day with photographs

10
  • End Product/Celebration
  • Whole school community to be involved
  • Work from the day to be displayed in the hall at
the end of the day for parents to look at
  • What will the legacy be? Newshounds, produce a
book of the days memories, use of website

11
What do we want to achieve tonight?
  • Year groups to decide what their focus will be
how will the children be involved through
    writing?
  • What each year group could provide for a display
in the hall at the end of the day for parents and
    children to look at.
  • When will it take place?
