Definitions from the PESSCL Survey
  • Curriculum time - The total time provided for PE
lessons during the school day (beginning after
    morning registration). This includes changing
time but not travelling time. It does not include
time provided at break and lunchtimes. Schools
with a two-week or ten-day timetable should add
the curriculum time over one complete cycle of
the timetable and divide by 2.
  • High quality PE and out of hours school sport -
This produces young people with the skills,
understanding, desire and commitment to continue
to improve and achieve in a range of PE, sport
and health-enhancing physical activities, in line
with their abilities, as set out in the High
Quality PE and Sport for Young People guide.

requires physical skilfulness and is part of the
    schools planned formal, semi-formal, supervised
or led provision. School sport typically takes

Challenges
  • Key determinant so far has been the good will
and/or enthusiasm of individual Head Teachers
  • Greatest influence on PSA data is through
    Secondary Schools increasing curriculum time
  • KS4 (yrs 10 11) is consistently the lowest
achieving group how can community based sport
    help?
  • The 5 hour offer removes the ability of schools
to meet the PSA target ALONE
  • E.G. Waverley Partnership recorded 4 hr data
25 of pupils meeting that target

7
Opportunities
  • The 5 hour offer removes the ability of schools
to meet the PSA target ALONE
  • Schools will have to engage with community
    providers to achieve the PSA
  • OfTSED will now ask schools if they are achieving
their 2 hours of HQ PE and School Sport Head
    Teachers will take notice!
  • Additional funding available for CSCs
  • SSPs and LAs/NGBs to joint fund coaches?
