Title: CORROSION PROGRAM

1
CORROSION PROGRAM
  • SMSgt Dan Squitieri
  • ACC/LGMS

2
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
  • A/C Wash Issues
  • T.O., Mil-Spec,QPL Relation
  • Coatings Career Field?
  • Material Integration Successes

3
Aircraft Washes Issues
  • Overdue Washes
  • MXG Commanders are directed to notify HQ ACC/LGM
  • Exceeding 30 days in normal condition /15 days in
    severe
  • Purpose is to avert overdue trends and HQ/SPO
awareness when wash capability is limited
    /unavailable during TDY/Deployments
  • Deployed Aircraft Wash Issues
  • Several locations in the AOR do not allow for A/C
    washes
  • Lack of wash facilities
  • Does not allow the collection of run-off water
  • Solutions
  • Air Force Corrosion Prevention and Control Office
    (AFCPCO) working to address issues
  • AOR site visit Feb 05 to several locations to
conduct site survey/ assessment of current
    environmental issues
  • Site recommendations that address
  • Corrosion problems
  • Facility requirements
  • Possible work-arounds
  • AFCPCO has researched off the shelf wash/rinse
    systems
  • After assessing the AOR, AFCPCO will assess level
    of capabilities (water, facilities, deployment
foot print) along with the wash requirements
  • Select system or components that best suits the
    war fighter

4
A/C Wash Issues Contd
  • Examples of a deployed E-8 going through PDM

5
T.O., QPL, Mil-Spec Relation
  • Technical Order (T.O.)
  • Air Force T.O. provides operation, maintenance,
    inspection, calibration and modification
instructions for centrally procured and managed
    systems and commodities
  • Designates approved Mil-Spec
  • AF Technical Orders (T.O.) have the authority of
the Secretary of the AF and failure to follow
    punishable under UCMJ
  • Military Specification (Mil-Spec)
  • Sets specific requirements for a material, e.g.
MIL-PRF 23377 epoxy primer sets std for dry time,
    adhesion, flexibility etc.
  • Qualified Product Lists (QPLs)
  • Identify commercial companies with products that
    comply with Mil-Spec requirements
  • Identify products tested that meet Mil-Spec
  • QPL is not authorization to use on specific
    aircraft (must use specific T.O.)

Coatings Career Field?
  • SecAF Directed Accessions Cuts
  • ASM is one of 55 Stressed AFSCs/ excluded from
    cuts
  • Directed Air Staff to restructure 2A7X3 career
field (ASAP) to be able to support LO maintenance
  • AF/IL initiated an AFLMA study (Jul 02) of ASM
    career field
  • AFLMA presented 5 options to restructure ASM
  • Opt 1 Maintain current AFSC
  • Opt 2 De-rivetize (pre-1989 structure)
  • Opt 3 Create stand-alone LO AFSC
  • Opt 4 Shred AFSC 2A7X3A--metallic maintenance and
    2A7X3B--composite, corrosion and LO maintenance
  • Opt 5 Shred AFSC 2A7X3A--metallic and corrosion
    maintenance and 2A7X3B--composite, corrosion, and
    LO maintenance
  • AFLMA recommended option 4, 2A7X3A--metallic
    maintenance and 2A7X3B--composite, corrosion and
    LO maintenance
  • AFLMA's recommendation was reviewed by 2A7X3 U
TW (14-18 Jun 04) working group and ACC did not
recommend restructuring AFSC at this time

7
Coatings Career Field Cond
  • Conduct a 2A7X3 Restructure IPT Apr 05 with
    MAJCOM CFMs
  • Recommend an option based off AFLMA Study
  • Decide where authorizations need to be placed
    based on IPT recommendation
  • Prepare restructure issues that leadership will
    need to consider before implementation

8
Material Integration Successes
  • Advanced Performance Coating
  • DEFT Inc. product meets current mil-spec
  • Authorized on all Mil-PRF-85285 coated systems
  • Better color retention less UV degradation
    easier to clean
  • Nonchromated Tie-Coat
  • Alternative to chromated primer during aircraft
    scuff-sand and overcoat process
  • Significantly reduces chromium use while still
    adequately protecting aircraft
  • Authorized in T.O. 1-1-8
  • Processes were tested on operational A/C for two
years prior to approvalagain, not used on all
    A/C, each SM must approve

CLOSING COMMENTS
  • Information provided and knowledge is your key
  • Take info back and implementMake a difference
  • Work closely with AFCPCO, MAJCOM Functionals, and
    Environmental to ensure success
  • Deployed washes are a major concern
  • Visible to senior leadership (AF/IL, ACC/LG)
  • ACC preferred coating system now includes
    tie-coat and APC top coat
  • Enforce Tech data!!!!!
  • Persistence is necessary
