The Life of John Dewey
  • Born in 1859 in Burlington Vermont.
  • Was an American psychologist, philosopher and
    educator.
  • Received his B.A. from the University of Vermont
    in 1879.
  • Received his Ph.D. from John Hopkins University
    in 1884.
  • Taught at the University of Michigan from 1884
    1888.
  • Taught at the University of Minnesota from 1889
    1894.

The University of Chicago Lab School
  • In 1894, he moved to Chicago with his wife,
    Alice, to start a school.
  • It was established in 1896 to test his theories
    about education.
  • The creation of the lab school is one of the most
    influential things he did for modern education.

He believed much of present education fails
because it neglects this fundamental principle of
the school as a form of community life. He
believed the discipline of the school should
proceed from the life of the school as a whole
and not directly from the teacher. He believed
the teacher should determine on the basis of
larger experience and riper wisdom, how the
discipline of life shall come to the child.
