Biology, Grade 12, University Preparation SBI
4UI/W
  • Mr. Deruyter

2
Overview of the Science Program from The
Ontario Curriculum, Grades 11 12, p, 6
  • The overall aim of the secondary science
program is to ensure scientific literacy for
every secondary school graduate. This aim can be
achieved by meeting three overall goals for every
    student.
  • to develop the skills, strategies, and habits of
    mind required for scientific inquiry
  • to relate science to technology, society, and the
    environment
  • to understand the basic concepts of science

3
The Seven Dimensions of Scientific Literacy.
  • The scientifically literate person
  • understands the nature of scientific knowledge
  • identifies and uses the concepts of science
  • uses the processes of science to further their
    understanding
  • acts in a manner consistent with the values of
    science
  • appreciates the interrelationships between
    science and technology
  • has an abiding interest in science
  • has manipulative skills

4
Why is it necessary to be scientifically
literate?
  • They meaning you - dear reader are not here
to worship what is known but to question it.
  • Jacob Bronowski
  • The Ascent of Man
  • 1971

5
Success Has Its Roots in Classroom Participation
"The fool wonders, the wise questions."
  • Each of you possesses a capable mind your
single most valuable asset. Like muscle, it must
be exercised or it will atrophy. Thus it is of
paramount importance that each of you exercise
your mind in class and out. Asking questions in
class will remedy potential problems that could
arise during a test or an examination. An
incorrect solution then is irrevocable and final.
Questioning enhances your understanding of the
subject matter and your ability to converse in
it. Each of you is capable of contributing.
Therefore it is expected and demanded of you.
Also, you cannot participate if you are not here!
Furthermore, you are responsible for completing
the work covered on the days missed.
  • The purpose of this course is to nurture the
power of thought and to develop and improve your
scientific literacy. The subject matter happens
    to be biology!

6
Why nurture the power of thought?
  • The world today is made, it is powered by
science and for any man or woman to abdicate
an interest in science is to walk with open eyes
    into slavery.
  • Jacob Bronowski
  • Science and Human Values
  • 1956

7
The value of understanding...
  • Man has created new worlds -- of language,
of music, of poetry, of science and the most
important of these is the world of the moral
demands of equality, for freedom, and for helping
    the weak.
  • Karl Popper
  • The Open Society and Its Enemies
  • 1945

8
The 6 Levels of Knowledge or Thinking
  • Awareness
  • Comprehension
  • Application
  • Analysis
  • Synthesis
  • Evaluation

The Seven Areas I Will Emphasize and Cultivate in
Your Science Education
  • coping with everyday demands
  • operating within and with the structure of
science ( i.e. evidence and theory)
  • making the connections between science,
    technology and decisions
  • developing scientific skills
  • generating correct explanations (i.e. the student
    as explainer
  • solving problems (i.e. the student as
    problem-solver)
  • providing a solid foundation

12
The 2008 Canadian Listeriosis Outbreak
  • outbreak first noticed in July
  • as of August 28, 22 people have died.
  • 35 deaths are being reviewed as to cause
  • infection is due to the bacterium Listeria
    monocytogenes
  • the source of the infection was traced to
contaminated deli meats from the Maple Leaf Foods
    plant in North York

13
Listeria monocytogenes
  • a motile flagellated bacterium
  • ubiquitous in the environment
  • acquisition is usually by ingestion of
    contaminated food
  • Listeria has been isolated from raw meat, dairy
    products, vegetables and seafood
  • primary cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis

14
Listeriosis
  • Incidence
  • 2-3 cases per annum per million persons in the
    USA,
  • 5 cases per annum per million persons in Sweden
  • Occurance mostly in newborns, the elderly and
    patients with compromised immune systems
  • Prevention
  • safe handling, preparation and consumption of
    food
  • thorough cooking of raw and left over food,
    washing of raw vegetables
  • avoid non-pasteurized dairy products

15
Joseph Lister (1827 1912)
Listeria monocytogenes and listeriosis are named
after Joseph Lister the father of antiseptic and
sterile surgery.
