People Involved in the Rescue

• The people throughout Denmark helped their fellow
  Jewish citizens escape from being captured by the
  Nazis.

What they did and risked for it.

• What the Danes did was to try to get the Jewish
  people out of Denmark and to Sweden.

• By doing this they risked getting caught by the
  Nazis and being sent to concentration camps or
  killed.

Where did this all occur?

• All the risk taking mostly took place along the
  coast of Denmark and throughout it as well.

Why did they take action?

• One morning on September 29, 1943, Rabbi Melchior
  warned the community that the Germans had
  planned to fill two cargo ships with Jews and
  take them to the camps. In hearing this the
  rabbi told all the Jews to leave their homes and
  hide.

How it all got accomplished.

• The Danish resistance made arrangements to
  transport the Jews from the many hiding places
  they had and they would take them to the coast of
  Denmark.

• From there they would be transported to Sweden by
  hiding in the hull of fishing boats.

What was the outcome?

• After a year and a half most of the Jews were
  freed. About 500 were captured and about 50
  died.
• King Christian X didnt forget about the 500 Jews
  who were captured. He took into consideration
  the well being of his people and asked that they
  be treated respectfully as human beings.
