• It is always being on the lookout for dangers

Why is lab safety important?

• The lab can be a very dangerous place.
• By doing the right thing, we can make sure
  everyone has fun in science without getting hurt.

classroom?

• Lets look around the room and identify the

How do I use the fire extinguisher?

• Pull the pin
• Aim at the base of the fire
• Squeeze the handle
• Sweep side-to-side

How do I use the fire blanket?

• Take out of the blanket box
• Smother the flames
• Wrap around the person who is on fire

How do I use the eye wash?

• Push the hand lever or
• Step on the foot lever
• Hold your eyes into the water
• Rinse from inside (closest to the nose) out
• Rinse for 15 minutes

How do I use the emergency shower?

• Pull the triangular handle
• Wash for at least 15 minutes
• Dont worry about your clothes! Well have to
  get you a change afterwards.

Where do I go for an emergency escape?

• Move quickly and quietly out the assigned door
• Move to the assigned area outside

How do I use the fire alarm?

• ONLY pull if instructed to!
• Push in the lever then pull
• CAUTION You will get ink on your hands!

How do I use the telephone?

• The in room phone does NOT dial out. It only
  allows you to call from room to room.
• Dial the number(s) for the office posted by the
  phone
• Be sure to identify who you are, where you are,
  and what the emergency is!

What do I use sand for?

• Sand can be used to put out small fires

When do I use the safety equipment?

• Sand and fire extinguisher are for small fires
  only.
• Use fire blanket for fires involving people.
• Eye wash and emergency shower need to be used
  anytime that chemicals get into your eyes or on
  your skin.
• The phone should be used only with teacher
  permission unless the teacher is the nature of
  the emergency.

What do I need to do to prepare myself and my
space for a lab?

• Wear closed-toed shoes
• Avoid loose clothing jewelry
• Pull back long hair
• Avoid using hair spray hair gel
• Protect your clothing
• Clear off all extra materials, books, etc.
• Always wear safety goggles whenever you work
  with
• Glassware
• Heat/fire
• Chemicals

Broken Glassware

• Alert the teacher when broken glassware is found.
  Then follow the teachers instructions for
  disposal.
• Never use chipped, cracked, or damaged glassware
  as it can shatter when heated.

When Heating a Container

• Never leave anything unattended while it is being
  heated.
• Make sure that the container being heated is
  always open.
• Always wear goggles while heating any type of
  container.

Never at Home

• Never practice a science experiment at home.
  Supervision should be present at all times.

If an Accident Occurs

• Always tell the teacher first.
• Even if you spill something on yourself, let the
  teacher know first before taking any action.

When Cleaning Up Your Lab

• Dispose of chemicals and other materials as
  instructed by your teacher.
• Never assume its OK to pour any leftover
  chemicals down the sink.
