Hoover Dam Bypass Colorado River Bridge

• Purpose
• -To reroute US 93 as a four-lane highway 1500
  feet down stream of the dam to ease traffic
  congestion, about 17,000 vehicles per day or
  nearly 7 million vehicles per year.
• - Allow for a quicker, more direct route between
  Phoenix and Las Vegas
• -Reduce the number of accidents and protect the
  area from hazardous spills or terrorism
• Create a highway that meets current design
  specifications

• Specifications
• 1900 feet in length with the main span being
  about 1080 feet
• Traffic will be about 840 feet above the Colorado
  River
• First Concrete-Steel Composite Arch in the US
• 114 million dollar contract bid

• Progress
• Bridge abutments have been poured
• Several bridge columns on both ends have been
  completed up to the bridge deck elevation using
  pre-cast concrete segments.
• -The tower cranes collapsed during extreme winds
  last September setting the project back almost
  two years to 2010
• -Arch construction expected to begin this year
