4Why do we need self care?
- 80 of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes,
and 40 of cancers could be avoided if common
lifestyle risk factors were eliminated - These conditions are linked by common risk
factors, underlying determinants and
opportunities for intervention - Almost 60 of the disease burden in Europe is
accounted for by seven leading risk factors

and control of noncommunicatible disease. WHO

5Shifting the culture
Derek Wanless will need to shift its focus
from a national sickness service, which treats
disease, to a national health service which
focuses on preventing it
The White Paper states that at each stage of the
professional education and regulatory process
action should be taken to change the underlying
culture profoundly and encourage support for
individuals empowerment and self care.
6Shifting the culture
People should be empowered to promote their own
health, interact effectively with health services
and be active partners in managing disease
The Choosing Health White Paper builds on the
publics growing desire for a healthier future by
ensuring that the self care support is in place
for people particularly those in disadvantaged
groups and areas to make healthier choices about
diet, physical activity and lifestyle.
