Bachelor of Medicine Joint Medical Program
(JMP)
  • 2006 approach for more medical places to address
    the rural doctors shortage. Tripartite agreement
    UNewcastle, UNew England HNEH.
  • Endorsed by Federal Government. An Australian
    first.
  • From 2008 onwards the Bachelor of Medicine
    program will be offered jointly by the University
    of Newcastle and the University of New England.
  • The curriculum, based on the current University
    of Newcastle program, will be identical at both
    Institutions. Candidates will have the
    opportunity to select the site at which they
    would prefer to complete the program when they
    lodge their on-line direct University
    application.
  • The Bachelor of Medicine is a 5 year
    undergraduate program.
  • Accredited by the Australian Medical Council.

Entry 2008
  • In 2008 there will be 160 Commonwealth Supported
    Places available
  • 100 at the University of Newcastle
  • 60 at the University of New England
  • Of the available Commonwealth Supported Places
  • 40 will be Bonded Medical Places
    (http//www.health.gov.au/bmpscheme)
  • 48 will enter under the Rural Remote Admissions
    Scheme
  • 72 standard / non-rural entrants
  • Within the above there will be 7 Medical Rural
    Bonded Scholarships (http//www.health.gov.au/scho
    larships).
  • In addition, at the University of Newcastle there
    will be
  • up to 28 Domestic Fee paying places
  • 24 International Fee paying places

Application
  • Register with UMAT Applications are now closed
  • On-time applications closed on 1 June 2007 late
    applications closed on 15 June 2007 (fees apply).
    UMAT was held on 25 July 2007.
  • Apply on-line to the Joint Medical Program
  • Applications close on 28 September 2007 late
    applications are not considered. Candidates
    apply either as rural (under RRAS) or non-rural.

    u/jmp
  • Applicants will be required to nominate their
    preferred enrolment location University of
    Newcastle or University of New England.
  • Lodge a UAC application
  • On-time closing date 28 September 2007. It is
    essential that the Bachelor of Medicine JMP is
    included as a preference by 30 November 2007 (UAC
    Code 780000 CSP and / or 781000 DFEE).

Candidates must lodge all THREE of the above
applications to be eligible to be considered for
entry to the Bachelor of Medicine - JMP

RRAS Rural / Remote Admissions Scheme
  • To be eligible candidates must have resided for
    at least a total of 5 years (consecutive or
    cumulative) in a rural / remote location from
    commencement of primary school.
  • Apply using the on-line direct University
    application RRAS Option
  • Must provide supporting documentation verifying
    rural/remote status claim (e.g., letter from
    principal)

Deans Regional List
  • Purpose to ensure that 20 of the entrants to the
    Bachelor of Medicine - JMP at the University of
    Newcastle are from a regional area
  • Recognition of the University of Newcastles
    commitment to regional areas
  • Only applicable to candidates applying for entry
    to the University of Newcastle
  • No separate application
  • Eligibility is based on Home address as listed on
    application

Rural Clinical Schools
  • Applicants should be aware that students enrolled
    in the Bachelor of Medicine JMP will be
    required to undertake placements at Clinical
    School locations away from their university of
    enrolment.
  • Students will be required to spend up to 2
    semesters away from their university of
    enrolment.
  • Students will be responsible for all costs
    associated with away placements.
  • The Clinical Schools are
  • The School of Rural Medicine (New England) / The
    Rural Clinical School (Newcastle) consisting of
    hospitals at Tamworth, Armidale, Taree, Moree and
    primary care settings across the Upper Hunter and
    New England regions
  • The Greater Newcastle Clinical School consisting
    of John Hunter, Newcastle Mater, Belmont,
    Maitland and James Fletcher Hospitals, the Royal
    Newcastle Centre and primary care settings in the
    Lower Hunter region
  • The Central Coast Clinical School consisting of
    Gosford and Wyong Hospitals and primary care
    settings in the Central Coast region

Things to Note
  • Interviews will be conducted in November
    December at 4 locations Newcastle (University
    of Newcastle), Gosford, Tamworth and Armidale
    (University of New England)
  • Applicants who are required for interview will be
    contacted in October either by mail or email
  • Minimum academic requirement UAI 93.8 or rural
    area 90.6
  • ATSI applicants University ATSI scheme B Med
    interview.
  • Offers will be made in the UAC Main Round in
    January 2008
  • Deferments are not automatic limited in
    number.
  • Students enrol at their respective University,
    but will have joint access to systems and
    services at each university.
  • Completing students will receive a double
    badged award.

  • Early exposure to clinical experience in their
    first year
  • Community oriented program expected to
    understand and respect the community they serve -
    encouraged to see the individual in context,
    treating patient as a whole person and in a
    manner consistent with his/her social or physical
    environment.
  • PBL centres on discussion and learning that
    emanates from clincally based problems.
  • The B Medicine JMP is governed by a JMP
    Governance Committee 2 VCs. CEO HNEH, Director
    of Clinical Operations HNEH, and 2 PVCs
  • UNE recruiting staff, building and equipping
    facilities, creating new learning environment.
  • Consistent administration of students - rules,
    academic years, processes, student systems,
    courses.
