Founding of Islam
  • Founded by Muhammad around 610 in Mecca, Saudi
    Arabia.
  • The Angel Gabriel came to him and through his
    visions he developed the Quran.
  • Muhammad began to preach these teachings.

Early Islam
  • Mecca was a center of worship for many religions.
    (Promoted Trade)
  • Leaders of Mecca run Muhammad out of Mecca
    because Islam is Monotheistic.
  • Muhammad and his Islamic followers go to Medina.
  • Islamic religion develops there.

  • Then Muhammad leads his Islamic followers back to
    Mecca.
  • There are 3 wars between Mecca and Medina.
  • Muhammad then establishes Mecca as the center of
    Islam.

  • Shahada- The Creed of Islam
  • Salat- Prayer
  • Zakat- Alms Giving
  • Ramadan- Month of Fasting
  • Hajj- Pilgrimage

Shahada
  • This is the Creed of Islam.
  • There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the
    Messenger of God
  • This reinforces Islams absolute monotheism.

Salat
  • This is Prayer to Allah (God)
  • These prayers take place 5 times a day.
  • -They are at established times in the morning,
    mid-morning, noon, afternoon, and evening.
  • -The worshipper faces Mecca when they pray.

Zakat
  • This is Alms Giving
  • A Muslim should give 2 1/2 of their income for
    Zakat.
  • This can be given to anybody within the Muslims
    community.
  • -So if there is someone needy in the community
    the Zakat can be given to them.

Ramadan
  • It is also known as Sawn.
  • It is in the 10th Month of the Islamic Calendar.
  • -Islam is on a lunar calendar.
  • Cannot eat from Sun up to Sun down.
  • -They are allowed to drink water (Islam did
    begin
  • in a desert)
  • It is to focus their lives spiritually.
  • -If someone breaks the fasting rules during
    Ramadan there are days added to their fasting.
    There are exceptions made for children, the
    elderly, and women who are pregnant.

Hajj
  • Is a pilgrimage to Mecca
  • It occurs during the 12th Month of the Islamic
    Calendar
  • A Muslim must try to go on the Hajj once in their
    lives.
  • -If the Muslim cannot physically go on the
    Hajj, they may send someone else in their place.

The Kaaba
  • Is what Muslims are praying towards when they
    face Mecca.
  • The Kaaba was a religious shrine to many Nomadic
    tribes before Islam.
  • It was said to be the place where Abraham (of the
    Bible) was to sacrifice his son Isaac.
