Title: PROBLEM 3

1
PROBLEM 3
  • A shallow pool of rainwater forms on a limestone
outcrop and persists long enough to reach
equilibrium with calcite. If the temperature is
    25 C, what is the pH? Assume a m.
  • If this is rainwater on an outcrop, then we can
assume that pCO2 10-3.5 atm. We can apply
equation (3-44) from Kehew (2001) (note you
should be able to derive this equation yourself)

2
  • Because we are told that we can assume a M, and
inserting the values of the equilibrium
    constants, we obtain
  • pH 8.29
