Title: JAPANESE

1
JAPANESE ACRCHITECTURE IN THE MEIJI AND HEISEI
PERIODS AND BLAH..
2
TRADITINAL AND BLAH..
3
Characteristic that have carried through the years
  • Historically, architecture in Japan was
influenced by Chinese architecture ripping of the
pagodas, although the differences between the two
    are vast
  • The Japanese did not paint their wood as much as
    the Chinese counterparts
  • The Japanese style was originally designed
without chairs in min but was transformed during
the Meiji period where as the Chinese have always
    used cairs

4
Influences on Japanese Architecture
  • Another major factor in the Japanese style of
architecture is the climate of the land
  • Summers in most of Japan are long, hot, and
humid, this is shown by the close attention paid
    to air flow.
  • The traditional building is raised a little so
that the air can move around and beneath it. Wood
was the material of choice because it is cool in
summer, warm in winter, and more flexible when
    earthquakes pose a threat.

5
MEIJI PERIOD AND BLAH..
6
Meiji Period Modern Architecture
  • Japan was wowed by modern architectural
techniques brought with with the launch of the
    Meiji Restoration.
  • The first buildings to see this light were those
that used the traditional Japanese wood but used
    western designs and motifs.
  • An elementary school in Nagano Prefecture became
template school for all to be built throughout
    the land.

Modern Architecture
  • In the 1880s, many of Japans people were
anit-westernization and wanted to keep out the
    bulding stlyes.
  • After World War I, traditional Japanese
architecture was re-amped with the coming of
architects like Frank Lloyd Wright (1869-1959) of
the United States and Bruno Taut (1880-1938) of
Germany came to work in Japan, both of who had a
    major influence on japans architecture.
  • After World War I the Japanese began to make
their own original tweaks to the International
    style in modern architecture.

9
Meiji Period ,Modern Architecture
  • By the early 20th century, European art styles
were well mooshed and their marriage produced
beautiful buildings like the Tokyo Train Station
and the National Diet Buildings of Japan.

10
HEISEI PERIOD AND BLAH..
11
The Heisei Period
  • After WWII, Japanese architects were posed with
the challenge of rebuilding Japan with the help
    of the U.S.
  • By the mid-1960s this caused the Japanese to
create many of t their own distinctive styles.
  • Some of the more notable Japanese architects
since 1950 are Kenzo Tange, Sutemi Horiguchi,
Kunio Maekawa, Togo Murano, Yoshiro Taniguchi,
    Noriaki Kurkokawa, and Arata Isozaki

12
The Heisei Period
  • Tange Kenzo, one of Japan's most famous and
influential architects, managed to weld together
    traditional Japanese architecture with modern
    technological advancements.
  • In the 50s and '60s he designed several eye
    opening structures, including the Yoyogi
National Stadium for the 1964 Olympic Games in
    Tokyo.

13
Characteristic that have carried through the years
  • Kenzo Tange designed the National Gymnasiums in
    1964 for the Tokoyo Olympics
  • His structures emphasize the contrast and
blending of pillars and walls, and with sweeping
roofs are reminiscent of the tomo-e (an ancient
    whorl-shaped heraldic symbol) are dramatic
    statements of form and movement.

14
Modern Japanese House
  • Western architecture began to displace
    traditional Japanese architecture.
  • Some modern Japanese detached houses still have
    a typically Japanese appearance.
  • Despite this they have ben modernised and look
much more western on the inside aside from the
straw mats that you may find

15
The Fuji TV headquarters in Odaiba is known for
its eccentric architecture.
Cool isnt it?
16
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office, Shinjuku-ku
Tokyo
17
  • Japanese buildings rank with the finest in the
world in terms of technology and formal
    conception.
  • Despite this I feel that Japanese architecture
has lost itself and Tokyo looks to much like New
    York
