  • What are the key scientific drivers?
  • 0.1-meV scientific case filling the gap b/w high
    and low frequency probes
  • Visco-elastic behaviors of disordered systems and
    fluids
  • New modes in complex fluids and confined systems
  • Collective modes in lipid membranes and other
    biological systems
  • 1-meV scientific case
  • Relaxation processes in disordered systems
    (glasses, fluids, polymers )
  • Phonons in single crystals, surfaces, thin films,
    high pressure systems, small samples, strongly
    correlated systems
  • 1050-meV scientific case separate beamline for
    electronic excitations
  • High flux experiments
  • X-ray Raman combined with small beam for small
    samples on nanoscale, high pressure, high fields,
    low T
  • Resonant inelastic scattering
  • Low(er) resolution mode also desirable.

  • 2) What technical capabilities will these
    require? (Beamlines, endstations, undulators)
  • Separate beamlines for 0.11 meV and 1050 meV
    and lower
  • As long an insertion device as possible (check
    minimum energy with minimum allowable gap)
  • Sample handling systems (microscopes, online and
    offline alignment system with unified mounting
    scheme)
  • 1-meV resolution with clean resolution function
    at 10keV would be important
  • Further improvement of resolution using position
    sensitive detector
  • Focusing optics to achieve focus of the order of
    a few microns
  • 3) Community size could be as large as neutron
    equivalent if user friendly
  • 4) What detector requirements does this field
    have?
  • 2D pixelated energy-resolving detector (require
    development)
  • 5) What software and computing infrastructure
    requirements are there? (Control, data
    acquisition, analysis)
  • User friendly with integration with position
    sensitive detector
