Title: The Accretion Disk Temperature Continuum Color Relation in Quasars

1
The Accretion Disk Temperature - Continuum Color
Relation in Quasars
  • Erin Wells Bonning (Obs. Paris - Meudon)
  • Gregory A. Shields, Sarah Salviander, Linpeng
    Cheng (UT - Austin)

2
Introduction
  • Naïve expectation from freshman physics hotter
    blackbody is bluer in color
  • AGNSPEC models (I. Hubeny and collaborators)
  • Non-LTE disk atmosphere.
  • Input range of MBH, accretion rates, random disk
    inclinations.
  • Total integrated spectrum with full relativistic
    effects.

SDSS DR3 Observations
  • Temperature of disk at radius of maximum flux
  • (Kerr BH)
  • Tmax 105.56 ? M8-1/4 ? (L/Led)1/4
  • MBH 107.69 Msun ? (FWHM3000 km/s)2 ? L440.5
  • Tmax depends inversely on FWHM of broad line.
  • Bin objects by Tmax and sum average flux ratios
    between 5100, 4000, and 2200 Å.
  • Sub-sample of 2,000 objects distributed among
Tmax with well-measured broad line widths.

Questions
  • What effect does galaxy contribution have?
  • 2200 Å dust, NLS1, high Eddington ratio?
  • What happens at higher redshift - can we use CIV
and L1350 to get a broader range in flux ratio?
  • Better understanding of accretion disk physics in
    AGN
