    based their Anatomical Therapeutic Classification
    on audit system in 1970s

  • Responsible for maintenance of audit
    classification system
  • System modification
  • Product classification
  • Committee consists of market researchers in
    member companies in Europe, a PBIRG
    representative, and an IMS representative
    (non-voting)
  • Requirements expert in audit/market
  • Try to get broad country representation

PBIRG Classification Chair
  • Reports to PBIRG V-P Secondary Research
  • participates in Executive Committee meetings
  • Advises and assists PBIRG members on issues
  • Is responsible for annual classification votes
  • Liases with EphMRA on PBIRG member
    questions/issues
  • Represents PBIRG on EphMRA/PBIRG committee
  • Active member of Classification Committee

Voting Procedure
  • If Committee approves for vote, EphMRA and PBIRG
    members receive information on the proposals
  • Vote eligibility Full members only
  • PBIRG Chair responsible for PBIRG vote
  • EphMRA Chair responsible for EphMRA vote
  • Final count weights all members equally (except
    for interested companies)

  • Alzheimers agreement readily reached
  • Attempt at total J revision abandoned after
    several attempts and consultation with WHO
  • Advisory ballots
  • 9 Proposals in 2000
  • New 3rd levels IBS, detoxifying agents for
    neoplastic therapy, diagnostic equipment, alcohol
    dependence, opioid dependence

New Product Launches
  • Local IMS proposes initial category among
    existing classes, often with agreement of local
    marketing unit
  • IMS completes a Form 9 for each product
  • Committee accepts/changes
  • Company can apply for change and it can be made
    during the first year
  • If no appropriate class, new one must be designed
    and voted upon for later re-classification of
    product
