THE FACE OF MIXEDNESS

Miscegenation Pronunciation \()mi-se-j?-na-sh?n,
mi-si-j?-na-\ Function noun Etymology
irregular from Latin miscere to mix genus
race The mixing of different racial groups,
that is, marrying, cohabiting, having sexual
relations and having children with a partner from
outside of one's racially or ethnically defined
group.
21
  • Miscegenation Cases
  • Kirby V. Kirby (1922)
  • Estate of Monks (1941)
  • Perez V. Lippold (1948)
  • Loving V. Virginia (1967)
  • Significance is that these cases demonstrated the
idea of racial grouping and prohibited mixed race
or interracial marriage thus making mix-raced
    children socially unacceptable.

22
TRAGIC MULATTA Historic Perspective on
Children of Interracial relationships The
trope of the tragic mulatto places on the
mixed-race subject, rather than on society, the
responsibility for any disconnectedness,
displacement, alienation, and lack of belonging
he or she might experience in a social context
that widely subscribes to deleterious dualism
(Pabst, p.196)

Many Americans continue to find interracial
relationships deeply troubling. (Pabst, p. 190)

However, Statistics show a hopeful view of
approval surrounding interracial
relationships. Percentage Approving of

MULTIRACIAL IDENTIFICATION BY STATE

30
Critique of the 2000 Census Looking at the
Caribbean and South Africa, it becomes equally
clear that formalizing a hierarchical tier for
mulattoes, half-castes, coloreds, or grays
does nothing whatsoever to undermine dichotomous
systems of domination, whether ideological or
institutional. (Pabst, p.203)
31
Naomi Zacks argument for the 2000 Census If
individuals or mixed race are granted a separate
racial identity, then all the myths of racial
purity and stability breakdown because there is
then such a large universe of possible races that
the historical contingency of any groups racial
identity becomes transparent. (Pabst, p. 202)
Maria Root argues Opening a dialogue about a
multiracial category for federal and state
government racial classification may be a way of
dismantling racial construction as we know it.
(Pabst, p. 202)

AUTHENTICITY Despite being able to be socially
identify as Multiracial or not there will always
be displacement of mix-raced children. In
spite of rumors regarding the infinite privileges
open to those of us with visible white ancestry,
there is always, yes always, a great deal of pain
that comes with this privilege. Our sufferings
as Black people of different shades are not
identical, and they arent even always equal, but
they most certainly are mutual. And because my
experience of racism as it is felt through this
light skinned body is not the same as that
experience which is felt through darker colored
flesh does not mean that either of the two is any
truer, more valid or authentic. Kristal Brent
Zook
34
  • Colorism The hierarchy of skin color black,
    brown, dark-skinned, light-skinned has long
been a source of division within African American
    communities. (npr,2007)
