Division For Third Graders
  • By Donald Barr

Introduction
  • Division occurs in math when one number is
divided or broken up by another number.
  • For example, if there are 20 students equally
spread out on 4 softball teams and you want to
figure out how many students are on each team you
would do the operation 20 divided by 4 to figure
out how many students would be on each team.
  • The division problem 18 divided by 3 equals 6 can
be shown in a number of ways, but is most
commonly shown in the ways below
  • 18/36
  • 1836
  • Even though the three forms of 18 divided by 3
equals 6 look different, they are all exactly the
    same.

  • There are special names for each part in a
division problem. The first number or the number
being divided is known as the divisor. The second
number is the dividend. The third number, or
answer to the problem is known as the quotient.
  • 18 3 6
  • In the problem above
  • 18 is the Divided
  • 3 is the Divisor
  • 6 is the Quotient

4
  • One method that can be used for solving division
    problems is placing grouping method.
  • For example, 183 can be represented by breaking
the number 18 into as many groups of 3 as
    possible.
  • Break up the 18 suns by circling groups of 3. How
    many groups do you have?
  • Answer 6

5
  • Another method to solve division problems is
known as the repeated subtraction method. The
answer is 6 because we had to subtract 3 from 18
exactly 6 times to get 0.

  • The common method to solving division problems
that have a two or more digit dividend, is long
division. The problem below is an example of how
to do a long division problem.
  • For this problem we will be using the example
    problem of 42 7.
  • 1. Place the divisor (7) before the division
bracket and place the dividend (42) under it.
  • 2. Examine the first digit of the dividend(4). It
is smaller than 7 so it can't be divided by 7 to
produce a whole number. Next take the first two
digits of the dividend (42) and determine how
many 7's it contains. In this case 42 holds six
sevens (6742). Place the 6 above the division
    bracket.

7
  • 3. Multiply the 6 by 7 and place the result (42)
below the 42 of the dividend.
  • 4. Draw a line under the 42 and subtract it from
42 (42-420). Since the result is 0 the division
is finished and 6 is the answer.
