What is RANET?

• RANET Radio and Internet technologies
• An international collaboration,began in Africa
  in 2000
• Makes information accessible to remote and
  resource-poor populations
• Aids day-to-day resource decisions and
  preparation against natural hazards

• Designed to enable reduction in vulnerability
• Aims to improve hydro-meteorological and related
  national services
• Increases the profile and active value of
  organisations to local populations

Who is RANET?

• A development program within and for the
  meteorological community
• An independent program whose members come from
  various international, regional and national
  organisations
• Focuses on weather and climate information, but
  partners are not solely the national
  meteorological services

• Significant ties with the World Meteorological
  Organisation
• Primarily managed at the country level
• Weather service or similar national agency
  functions as the primary facilitator

• Helps to negotiate access to large networks
• Strives to build a sustainable program
• At local level equipment is managed and owned by
  communities

• satellite systems

What is Worldspace ?

• Developed and manages the satellite system
• Enables RANET to broadcast multimedia (data)
  content to all of Africa and most of Asia
• Worldspace Foundation provides RANET with access
  to a portion of the 5 dedicated to humanitarian
  use

Feeding the data broadcast

• Test broadcast currently fed from NOAA
• Bureau of Meteorology is testing a new data feed
  via the Singapore uplink earth station
• Ability to switch any GTS product to the
  satellite
