  • India was the most important jewel in the British
    Empire. Indians wanted Independence like the
    other colonies. Two nationalist organizations
    were Indian National Congress and the Muslim
    League.India helped the British in WWI and Indian
    wheat fed the Allied troops More than a million
    Indians fought in the war. The nationalist
    movement was divided Muslim against the Hindu
    neither side trusted each other. Many Britians
    were against letting India go. In 1919 Britian
    placed harsh laws on the Indians to put down any
    rebellion.In Amritsar the british had outlawed
    large gatherings 10,000 indians gathered British
    troops trapped the Indians and killed 400 indians
    including children 1,200 were wounded.

Mohandas Gandhi
  • A leader arose from the nationalist named Gandhi.
    He had been educated in England, and practiced
    law in South Africa. In South Africa in 1914 he
    led protest against racial discriminations. He
    was against violence he was a pacifist. He used
    Civil disobedience-refusal to obey the laws that
    were unjust. He worked with the Indian national
    Congress to bring self gov. and greater tolerance
    for social and religious groups. He incouraged
    Indians to reject the western ways. He became
    popular and was named Mahatma- great soul.
    Gandhi used the term satyagraha meaning truth
    forceto describe the protest marches. He used
    the boycott. He wanted Indians to make their own
    clothing. In 1922 he was arrested and was not
    scene until 1930 when he was released.

Moving toward Independence
  • Gandhi used Salt to protest next. The British
    were incontrol of the Salt mines and Ocean salt
    field and it was illegal to collect salt on your
    on . Gandhi protest the salt tax and led
    followers to Ahmadabad to the sea to collect
    salt. The British did not arrest him but his
    followers. A month Later he was arrested but the
    protest only grew. Webb miller recorded a protest
    where Indians marched on a salt mine knowing they
    would be beaten down they still went forward.
    Guns and clubs could not stop the nationalism of
    the Indians. Finally the Gov of India act which
    gave a constitution to India. Indians had control
    over agriculture and education, public health.
    The british remained in control over the law
    making and enforcing. The Hindu and Muslims had
    still hated each other.Mohammed Ali Jinnah
    demanded a separate muslim nation in India.
    Jawaharlal Nehru a follower of Ganghi wanted a
    united India. Gandhi pushed for toleration but it
    did not work.
