BREADS AND CEREALS GROUP
  • Breads and cereals include bread, pasta, rice,
    and cereals.
  • Serving sizes include one slice of bread, one
    half cup of pasta or cereal.
  • Daily servings vary for age groups however, for
    a teen the acceptable amount is eight to ten
    servings per day.

THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES GROUP
  • Two to four servings of fruit are needed per day.
  • Serving sizes, if measured out of hand, are the
    size of a tennis ball, approximately six inches
    long, or one half cup.
  • Three to five servings of vegetables are
    required each day.
  • Serving sizes are similar to the fruit serving
    allotments.
  • Dark, green leafy or orange veggies supply beta
    carotene and vitamins.

MEATS AND DAIRY GROUP
  • The meat group includes eggs, nuts, beans and
    legumes, as well as fish, beef, pork,and chicken.
  • A serving size is 3 oz.of meat, 1/2 c. of beans,
    1/4 c. nuts, or one egg.
  • Cheese, milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese are
    examples of the dairy group.
  • Eight ounces of milk, 1/2 c. of yogurt or cottage
    cheese or 1 1/2 oz. of cheese counts as a serving.

FOOD EQUIVALENTS
  • One ounce of cheese is the same size as a tube
    of lipstick or 4 stacked dice.
  • Three ounces of meat is about the size of a deck
    of cards.
  • A medium apple or peach is the size of a tennis
    ball.
  • One cup of mashed potatoes or broccoli is about
    the size of a persons fist.

FAT GROUP
  • Fat is a member of the OTHER group located at
    the top of the pyramid. USE SPARINGLY.
  • Examples of foods within this category are
    margarine, butter, dressings, cream cheese,
    chocolate, ice cream, bacon, etc.
  • Serving sizes are small for example, most
    labels list butter or margarine as 1 teaspoon,
    dressings as 1 tablespoon, and cream cheese as 2
    tablespoons.

  • THIS SUBSTANCE IS INCLUDED WITHIN THE OTHER
    GROUP, ALSO.
  • USE SPARINGLY.
  • INCLUDED WITHIN THIS CATEGORY ARE CANDIES,
    JELLIES AND JAMS, CARBONATED BEVERAGES,
    RECONSTITUTED FRUIT JUICES, SHERBETS, SORBETS,
    ETC.
